Hobby-Lobby Warbirds?
To all,
I think the warbirds that hobby-lobby sells (Alpha and flying styro) are great looking planes but, I couldnt help but notice that almost none of them have functional landing gear. So, my question is do any of you have any experiance with these models and if so would it be alright to make up a set of mains for them or perhaps someone has sets for them ? Thanks in advance.

Belly landing them is very easy. Adding mains is certainly do-able, but would add weight and sure detract from their looks.

If you want one, you better buy one now...seems like they are getting out of the warbirds...fast....four or five have been removed from the list in the last two weeks...

If you put a little work into them, especially if you run the normal over powered brushless motor set up in them, it's not that hard to install retracts. Would give you what you want, only make them look better, and increase your enjoyment. And for that matter, if it doesn't have a rudder, adding a steerable tail wheel is a piece of cake. Mechanical retracts are cheap, air systems though will set you back more then you paid for the bird.

I have the Alfa P-51 Marie and the Flying Styro P-40. I like the Alfa kits MUCH better than the Flying Styro. The P-40 looks great but the way you have to glue the firewall in is absolutely ridiculous, no guidelines whatsoever. And, the way I understand, most Flying Styro planes are the same way so if Hobby-Lobby wants to discontinue them, let them do it. On the other hand, the Alfa P-51 flies terrific and is a great build. I wouldn't recommend putting landing gear on though, the belly of most of their planes are plastic reinforced so belly landings work fine.

I'd have to agree totally with you, Air3D540. I had the FSK Spitfire, and found it to be a nightmare to build. My Alfa FW 190 was an absolute pleasure on the other hand. The Alfa's are far more user friendly, and I don't think the flight characteristics between the two companies products are all that different. I just wish Alfa would expand their line, as I find their selection of models pretty limited.
