GWS Beaver
Hi anyone have any tips regarding building the Beaver? In particular the motor mount....it appears it has to be glued in at a slight angle? The instructions aren't to clear.
My kit shipped with the E-300 motor/gearbox....can I use my 8.4v 730mAh 7cell (AAA) battery pack?
Thanks

My GWS stick had the motor angled in at 3 to 5 degrees.. it is because of the torque of the motor wanting to pull the plane a certain direction, so the motor is angled the other way,, in a straight line the plane is actually flying crooked.......this usually is only the case in the really light foam planes...once you get up to a couple of pounds (I think) the angle is no longer needed

Auzzie,
To answer your question about the 7 cell pack.Sure you can
use it. You my have to rout out some foam for the pack to fit,
but thats not a problem.7 cell pack [may] reduce the life of the motor somewhat, but I know some guys are using that combo
in the Beaver.I'am using the 6 cell 600 mah pack and it seems to
have good power and duration, 10-14 minutes.
Really like this little plane, flies GREAT!
Good Luck

Jetmech & Floppy,
Thanks guys for the suggestions....floppy to angle the motor slightly down do you need to sand a little out of the motor mount slot?
I've sprayed my beaver a mustard yellow colour.....I think it looks good I'll try & post pictures soon! I'm also going to epoxy some carbon rod along the leading edge of the wing (actually just underneath the leading edge).
Fernando.

Choad,
Thanks for the tips, did you have any problems with the CG? I also found the initial instructions pretty bad especially the part regarding the placement of the hole for the rudder servo.
Fernando.

WOW
Gee that was pretty awsome.....considering the risk if he were to have botched the landing!
I'll post some pictures of my Beaver very soon since I've sprayed mine a mustard yellow & dark blue theme!
Any day now I'll be ready for the maiden flight!

Trouble Building
Talk about frustrated!!!!
First I get the rudder servo wire hole wrong.....twice! The instructions don't make it very clear AT ALL exactly where to put it....what's worse the elevator side (on the inside) there is a small angular slot/hole pre-moulded into the foam. Yet on the other half of the fuselage (where the rudder servo wire is suppose to go) there is no moulding whats so ever! Having built a GWS P51 (previously) it's instructions are MUCH better! & both the rudder & elevator servo wire holes are at the same point on either side. Yet the Beavers' rudder servo wire hole is (I believe) suppose to be near the top of the fuselage & the elevator hole near the bottom?! What gives!
Then that stupid piece of plastic which goes over the wing joint! If you follow GWS's instructions & you cut the plastic cover piece out along the marked lines it doesn't sit right when you try to stick it to the wing! I gave up (after ripping all my paint off) & I cut the damn thing down the middle & epoxied the 2 pieces on individually. That after epoxying the wing halves together first instead of using the double sided tape!
As it stands now I have one very stiff wing with exactly 10 degrees dihedral & carbon rod reinforcing along the leading edges of the wing.
OK......I feel better now! Anyone else encounter these "difficulties"?

Fernando,
The CG on the plane is totally center on the wing, if you hold the plane on the center of the wing, it should balance on your fingers.
This plane is great, i flew it again yesterday! Cant get enough!
Mike
(p.s yes i had some problems with the holes but I figured it out )

Don't the instuctions say that the CG should be between 40 - 50 mm from LE of wing? that is almost an in forward of the center of the wing. Maybe that is why I am having problems getting my Beaver up. Mine struggles to get any lift. I was using 1000 mAH cells that are aaa's but about 1/3 longer than a normal aaa in an 8 cell pack. My Plane just does not want to climb. Prop is on corect. So maybe my CG is to far forward and it is to nose heavy.

Whoooo Weee
Ok today was my maiden flight! Not only for my new Beaver but also for ME! Man! What a great feeling my Beaver took off the tarmac beautifuly & flew like a dream!
I had to fly at half throttle because at full throttle it was REALLY quick! Even at less than half throttle the Beaver flies really well. On my 7 cell AAA NiMH pack it flew for about 12 minutes!
But dammn is it hard to land...it really makes me appreciate how good you guys are when I see video of GWS P51 etc landing so gracefuly! Unfortunately I busted those crappy GWS main landing wheels because in an attempt to land, it suddenly lost altitude very quickly!........Why you ask? Well the prop nut had come loose! & there was no drive to the prop!
Anyway after that I got my wife to hand launch for me....how easy was that! Afterwards I hand launched my little Beaver myself! This is GREAT fun! Thanks for every one on this forum the reinforcing of my wing leading edges has paid dividends! I can't wait to get out again & this time video the event!

Auzzie,
I would put a prop saver on the Beaver. Type in "prop saver" in the search area, a couple of them are listed.
Wheels, check the DuBro superlite wheels. You can see them on my beaver at: http://geocities.com/hoppyfl
Good luck

Hoppy thanks for the tips, I'm going to get some wheels for the Beaver tomorrow. I also have to get some balsa to replace the foam strips which attach to the landing gear wire (they're there for decorative purposes I think).
I'll look up the prop-saver like you said.....cheers.

Alot of stick time
As I was just posting somewere else, this plane is realy cool,I fly one with 6 cell 500 Ma NiCds I got a lunch box of them, then I can put in one of the 6 cell AA packs, and it still flies great. This plane even has a CIRRUS-10 Gyro on the rudder.I starting to think it could carry a cam. or something.
