real trouble
Lets start off on the wrong foot. How many hobby store retailers are selling park flyers AND NOT telling the new RCer that flying his plane could crash AMA flyers flying at their legitamate flying site if they are too close [Like within 3 miles of that site]. There has been increasing reports of park flyers being seen flying close to our flying site and some as close as a half mile away. Theres no doubt that those park flyers are on the same frequency and its only a matter of perfect timing sometime during the day before an AMA member loses his plane. AMA and the manufactuers of the park flyers should have been on this at the very beginning they came out. How do you get a pico flyer to realize the magnitude of this problem. Im not saying they dont have a right to fly, but for hecks sake, Twice ive been told to go to Hell, im going to do whatever/fly wherever i want. these are people
who have been approached in a very polite an freindly manner to no avail. Does any one have any ideas/suggestions as to how a problem like this can be resolved or what to do? The un-easy feeling of flying a $1200 ultimate knowing that at any moment i could lose it because a pico flyer is unaware, inconsiderate, ignorant or down-right rude and doesnt want to join our club so as to fly in a controlled area is very unsettling. How about some responses please. Michael

Chuck, that sounds tempting, but it may not be the right way of solving this. A $ 150 freq scanner is what im picking up today at Rad shack, maybe being fore-warned would help. michael

That last post was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Has anyone explained that these guys stand to lose their planes as well as you do?
Seems a reasonable person would want to protect themselves from crashes, even if their investment in money and time isn't as great.
I don't know if a freq scanner will help if someone suddenly turns their Tx on while you're flying. You won't have much reaction time.
Good luck with this.

Mjs,
I am new to RC and recently purchased a Gws Beaver At a LHS and they never said a word about AMA. My son also bought a mini max a few months ago and nothing was said to him as well. When I fly I try to avoid flying near RC ports. The nearest one is 15 miles from my house anyways. The thing I here most electric flyers say is "Why do I need to join some club, or the AMA. When I can just got to the local Park and fly or pick some remote field and fly. I am considering joining ama but for the cost of it I can buy almost 2 planes. One other thing about joining a club is most I have found if you just fly electrics the we dont want you. Any events or watever are centered around gas planes.
Where do you fly out of, What RC Port. I am in Utah as well. The closest one to me is either Lehi or Spanish Fork. But since I am not in AMA I just go and watch and leave my planes at home. In all the dozens of times I have gone, this past saturday was the first that I have seen someone with an electric (Moogallo).
By the way if I do see a plane up in the air I will not turn on my TX until I have gone and talked to them to see what chanel the are on. The thing that worries me is when flying in a Park kids have there RC cars going all over the place as well so if I see one I will not fly. I dont feel the need to put my plane in to someones car or house.

Your one of the few who appear to be considerate, thank you. Cars and boats are on a diffrent frequency, no problem there. The problem is the retailer worried about losing a sale--$$$$ if they warn the new person that there are a number of things to consider when they turn on that TX. I am out at the Logan-Cache airport. When the Pico craze got started a few years ago, thats when the "glitching" also started< along with an airport perimiter fence [that acts like a parabolic dish] it may well be a contributing factor. Im sitting here shaking my head back and forth, not know ing how to resolve this. Replies welcome, Michael

My LHS didn't warn me either when I got my Soarstar. When I started with my T-Hawk I was scared some kid with a RC car would cause problems. I'm scared some guy in a close neighborhood will shoot my TM down when he fires his plane up or tests his servos. And forget the local club- gassers only.

Swell, Im into this hobby over $25,000 in three years, with no real solution to the renegade flyers. Sounds like your LHS also was just another concerned with only making the money. When all peaceful measures to resolve this have been exhausted [and theres not many] Im sure were going to see a dramatic increase in violent/physical confrontations. I cant believe ive gotten into this hobby so deep only to now realize it may be better to get out of if. Michael
