The recomended setup works pretty well imo - ie, JR-241 Sub-Micro servo and R610M receiver, and the E-flite 20A ESC with brakes. If you're looking at getting the JR Quattro Lite setup, I'd recomend spending a little more for the JR 421EX micro setup. (bear in mind you do pay a little more for JR radios over Hitec; the other option is to get the Flash 5x but you will need HS-55 servos, not the HS-81). Battery pack I'm using 8 cell 2/3 A Nicad pack 600mAH (Sanyou KR600AE cells). fwiw E-flite also has a pack for the Ascent, and it should work well.
The only 2 problems I've had with the Ascent is the rudder linkage, and the fact that the prop is too big for the motor (over-heats the motor). Problem #1 is easy to solve, Problem #2 is a little more involved. I'd recomend that you don't power on the motor for more than 30sec to 45sec at a time.
If this is your first R/C plane, I'd recomend getting some help if you can. The plane is easy to fly, but the long glides make landing a little tricky if you're not used to it. While waiting for your plane to arrive, you can d/l the manual here to read:
