    Hobbico FlyZone® Piper J-3 Cub RTF

    Hello,
    I've been flying a Hobbico Superstar .40 for a couple of months now and I'd like to get a parkflyer I can use at a local park and also to help get my wife and daughter into the hobby and not have to drive 40 miles to the "Local" field everytime we want to fly. We've been looking at the Hobbico FlyZone Piper J-3 Cub RTF. It comes with the Tactic radio which I can use with my Futaba on a buddy cord. And I like the fact that it's a parkflyer with ailerons.
    RTF for $159.00 Anyone here ever flown this? If so, what do you thing about it?

    I was looking at that one too. I personally think it would be a great choice for a starter plane if you want to spend a little more money, especially since its a 4-channel. I have read alot of good stuff about the Hobby Zone Super Cub, thats a 3-channel and its the same price, could be a better beginner plane.

    I flew for the first time this evening. ROG on the first flight, but then hand launched it 3 times after than (practicing landings).
    Since it's my first flight ever, I cannot compare the FlyZone® Piper J-3 Cub RTF to anything else...but I love it!

    Well...I ended up getting a Dumas Swamp Buggy! I have a couple nitro airplane engines I'm not using and I thought I'd get an Air Boat so I could use it on the water and have something to run on snow or grass.

    But I'll still be getting another airplane. I'll reply back when I do.

    I just got mine today. I have a friend that sold me one for 109.00 shipped!

    Getting it ready to fly took about 5 minutes. Im going to fly it in the park tomorrow after work. Ill report back.

    Ok, so it has a 380 motor and 15 amp esc. I want to upgrade to brushless. What motor/esc should I look at? I plan on using an 11 volt lipo.

    I flew mine today for the 1st time. Flew down the street in a limited space area. I took off on a sidewalk and almost lost it twice before reaching 20'. Recovered and flew well, was making a tight turn about30' and pulled it in tight, she stalled and snap into a spin. Hit in grass, broke wing in half, cracked cowl and bent motor shaft. All my fault, she flew well but is not for beginers, I did put clevis in holes for more control throws so watch out for that. It cost me about $40 for that mistake, should have waited and flown at model field. I just bought the PARK ZONE Super Cub last week and much prefer it's flying habits, much more docile. The FLYZONE Cub is very heavy for it's size.

    I would go for an AXI 2208/26 coupled to a 7X4. It will produce about 14oz of thrust at 10A and weighs 1.6oz. The Castle Creations Pheonix 25A would be a good choice for an ESC.

    To upgrade your Cub to brushless, consider using a TowerPro outrunner. Heads-Up-RC on ebay has some great deals: http://stores.ebay.com/Heads-Up-RC

    To mount the motor, I have found that the E-flite stick mounts work great.

    Not a good first day with this bird....

    Took off, climbed out and within 5 seconds, the bec kicked in. This was on a full charge!
    I didnt have enough altitude to establish a glide and it hit the turf; broke the prop and cowl, not a big deal.

    Called Hobbico and they said it must be a faulty esc and promptly sent me a new one. Not bad.

    Im going to run it full throttle on the ground for a minute or so to make sure it doesnt happen again. Bummer.

    No, the ESC can be programmed with the transmitter. Although not all functions can be set due to the limited on / off commands given by the transmitter.

    My first thought was battery, if it is NiMh. Usually I give my packs a hard first charge and discharge for 2 or 3 cycles. Then balance the pack out with C/10, re-peak, and go fly. It's not a rule by any means, as others do it differently.

    My set up for the flyzone piper cub.

    motor: e-flite 450 outrunner 890kv

    motor mount: an e-flite outrunner mount is attached to an e-flite stick mount (2pieces)

    esc: castle creations phoenix 25 A

    pack: 3 Cell- thunder power 15C- 2100maH

    prop: apc 9x7 EP

    flight report: the flyzone piper cub flies awsome with this set up. It was flown without landing gear to protect the motor shaft. You have to land it on a grass. The plane with landing gear tends to flip over even on a smooth landing.

    I was wondering will the cold Iowa Winters effect this planes battery power?

    I Just ordered the Hobbico FlyZone J3Cub today , I got it for $64.00 after
    all my discounts. I do now have 2 40 size cubs but they are OS 70FS driven.

    How long does this set-up fly for? I am new at this electric power flying.

    Well, it is a summer time now in Madagascar with a low humidity, so I have no idea how cold it is right now in the US. It's a winter time, right? Based on my exeperience with Nicad and Lithium batteries, they tend not to maintain their capacity if they are exposed to a temperature below 33 F. That's why, your flight time is shorter than you expected on a cold day, especially when the temperature drops below 30 F. Your hand is shaking and you barely feel the control stick!
    On a calm day, the flight time of my upgraded J3 cub is 15 to 17 minutes with some throttle management. It is 9 to 11 minutes if you push it a little bit. I usually land the plane before the BEC shuts off the motor to protect the lipo from being overdischarged.
    The stock set up gives you only about 6 to 8 minutes and you have to give it full throttle to maintain level flight. The cheapest upgrade for the J3 Cub is to use any two cell-lipo battery that has a capacity of 1700 to 2200mah, but you have to enlarge the battery bay. The stock 380 motor can handle a two cell-lipo battery.

    I fly all day long with LiPo and I live in Canada where it's anwhere from 0C -> -20C.
    What I do is warm the LiPo prior to flying. It works great.

    And how do you warm the battery up first?
    Ok I just looked at my dig temp Gage and
    it shows 1C is 35 degs that still is above freezing.
    I get below that temp in these next couple months.
    Is there anything else I need to change or fix on this new plane before
    flying it?

    On the way to the field it sits on the dash near the defroster vents in my car. It usually is around 30-35C when I get to the field. If you have the heat on in the car, it will most likely be fine when you fly it. Today I went flying and it is -4C. That's

    In some Fast Electric boat races, racers would use a heating pad to warm up the packs before running. When warm they output more power.

    Bent to the left? It should be pointing down and to the right. This is looking at it like a car, it's right side, not yours.
