Firebird XL Mods and tips
Has anyone have a site where they have Mods for the Firebird XL?
I'm having issues with mine. I cannot turn right, it will just turn left.
I was wondering about mods for the vtail or something.
Please let me know if anyone has a URL of a site that has mods for this plane.

I had a similar problem with my Firebird XL out of the box. Same problem, even. Wanting to turn left really easily, but very low turn response to the right.
Adjusting the tension of the fishing line to the control horns on the tail solved the problem. Mine had too much slack out of the box. Tightening it up fixed the problem.
I don't know if this is an "approved" mod, but I added about 2/3 of an inch of thin wax cardboard onto the back of my tail flaps with a bit of packing tape, and that made a huge difference in the turning of my plane.
Just a suggestion!

One thing you definitely should do is to put a strip of tape (2" packing tape, duct tape, fibreglas stapping tape, etc.) wrapped around the trailing edge spanning the diameter of the prop, plus a bit. When you have a (ahem...) hard landing, the prop will gouge the bejesus out of the TE. A couple of extra rubber bands so the wing doesn't shift so easily also helps. It's also a good idea to cut your motor just before impact, but who can THINK then?
After you get used to the plane, you might try running the lines thru the lowest holes in the horn, and then up the horn, where you can slip on the tubing. The closer the pull to the surface, the more deflection of the surface you'll get--i.e., more control effect.
I'm working on building a new tail out of balsa, with a LOT more surface area on the ruddevators, or whatever they are. I'll give a progress report.

For what it's worth, I've flown my FBXL twice -- crashed twice. Same problem both times: Inability to turn right. I've checked the alignment of the surfaces, made sure everything is tight, etc, etc. It loves to go left, but will not turn right at all.

Get the Areobird tail series "X". It will work for the XL and it has about 30% more area! Works great! Also, be sure to get the Areobird wing, it gives you alot better performance on loops and dives. Hope this helps,

I had the same problem
Flying my brother-inlaw's Firebird II - turned out to be the stickers on the wing!
Here is my thread I posted on the fix
Take the stickers off the wing and the airplane may fly straighter.
Try a fighterbird wing without any stickers, they fly better than the XL wing IMO..
