Default Gws A-10...speed 400 Pusher?

I was wondering if anyone has tried to fly this nice looking bird with a direct drive speed 400 pusher set-up? This is my second A-10 and am not happy with performance. I want to avoid upgrading both fan units and end up spending $100. With the stock set-up AUW was 16.5 oz. I have now removed both fans and installed a direct drive speed 400 that came out of my retired Projeti. AUW including motor and 8-cell battery is 21 oz. Does anyone have any idea if this would work? Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Don't know - but the original GWS prototype used 2 direct drive 280's and the mounts are those foam pieces in the back of each nacelle. One guy over at another forum has converted it and it flew well

A single spd 400 in the tail should work great, and should be of good speed with a zagi prop. Maybe use a 6V motor and an 8 cell pack. A 8 cell he1100 pack will fit into the battery slot provided if fashioned as 5 standing up and 3 laying on top of those. You may need a few mods to for strength like the fuse mounted wing nut being a weak area for your weight, also maybe a few bamboo spars in the fuse, it's fragile at 16 oz.

Well I am happy to report that the 1st flight was a success. At 21 oz. rog takeoff did not work. So I went for a hand launch and off it went into the sky with noticeable performance. I was able to achieve steeper climb. Speed was a bit faster.
With 500 mah 8 cell flew about 3 minutes. With the motor off
I was able to setup a perfect landing approach to perfect flare. I didnt expect this plane to glide very well at 21oz. Will try an apc prop. Any suggestions on the Wattage cobalt motor? Could I use my 8 cell 500mah nicads?

I do believe that cobalt would do much better on 10 cells and a 6x4 or 5x5 prop. 8 cells probably doesn't do that motor justice, and HE 1100 cells maybe be a better those 500's will die fast. HE 1100's good for about 11ish amps max continuous, upto 15 with throttle management. You may want to go back to a 6v spd 400, that loves 8 cells.

I HAVE BEEN LUCKEY. I NEVER ADDED THE STEERING SERVO, WENT WITH AN 8 CELL BATTERY , GLUED THE FRONT WHEEL STRAIGHT AND THE PLANE FLYS GREAT. I TAKE OFF AND THROTTLE BACK SO NOT TO BURN OUT THE MOTORS. I MAY BUY ANOTHER AND GO TO HOBBY LOBBY FOR THE TWO FAN UPGRADES FOR TOP SPEED. I HAVE FOUND THERE EXPERTISE IS NEVER WRONG ON POWER PLANT SUGGESTIONS AND BATTERIES.
