Right batteries for sp280 wing?
I am buying a 24 1/2 in. wing from the Swap Shop here and it has speed 280 mtr the seller recommends 800ma batteries would it be better to have 1200ma or is there a reason to stay with small capacity battery. Also would it be better to upgrade to a speed 300 motor new to electrics so I need a little learning. See attached pic and by the way he has more for sale for $35 if anyone is interested.

I've had no problems running a Gunter 5x5 prop on a S280 on 7 or 8 cell AAA, Nicads are 270mAh, NiMh are 700mAh. Static amps in is the 5A range. Nicad run time is 4min+, NiMh is in the 8min+ range. I'd stay away from a larger (hence heavier pack), it does make a world of difference in performance. Your other option might be to run Li-Poly cells.

Hi Easysport - Peter is correct in that you need to limit your pack weight to about 100g (an 8-cell 270mAh 2/3AA NiCd weighs exactly that). An 8-cell 720AAA NiMh at 106g is about as heavy as you can go, but this type of pack would give you 5amps without too much trouble. If the plane would cope with a little extra the 8-cell 5/4AAA 800mAh NiMH pack (114g) would allow you to drain 8amp max.
A 300 motor would give you a significant boost in performance, but the standard 6V 300(GR3306) is NOT meant to be run as direct drive (I tried a 6x4 on mine once and as the amp draw climbed through 12amps I had to shut it down!). Perhaps the new 7.2V Speed 300 (GR7302), which IS rated for direct drive, would work well. Otherwise you might upgrade to a higher quality 280 like the Mega MIG (KM280), the Speed 280 Race 6V (GR7300) which reportedly can cope with almost 30W input in direct drive mode. If you really want to go crazy the Mini AC1215/16 is said to be able to cope with 88W input @15A and turn a 4.7x4.7 prop at almost 20,000rpm!
