Default T-28 upgrade for PK-T28

I want to hype up my stock PKTt-28 with a larger motor. The recommended motor seems to be the 3536 but it is too short for the stock motor mount.

I know I can get a modified motor mount off Ebay for $20, but was looking at some motors and found this motor that matches the size of the stock PK 480 for overall length and dia.

TR 35-42D 1000kv Brushless Outrunner (Eq: AXi 2820)

I am not worried about the mounting holes as I can drill new ones if needed.

Any one use this motor in the past and if so what prop size is recommended?

I suspect that a 8 to 9" prop would work with this low KV motor without drawing too much amps.

I upgraded my T-28 with an E-Flite Power 10. Lots more power and a direct replacement for the stock motor. A drop in fit with no re-drilling and exactly the same length as the stock motor. Even the stock prop works perfectly. If you want easy, this is the way to go.

Well I went and did it. I ordered the SK3542D and a 50A ESC.. The measurements are dead on and only 1mm longer on the motor shaft than the stock one and should not be a problem with length and getting it in the cowl.

I thought of the E-flite but just couldn't cough up the $50.00 for the motor and another $50 for the ESC.

I got both items for $45.00 from H.K. Will try that route first. If it dont work I can always use the motor on another plane...

Wish me luck.......

By the way I'm still using the 30 amp esc with the Power 10 and it's fine.

Well the motor draws 40 - 50A during flight (not really clear on the specs, kinda skimpy). But it should swing a good 10 " prop and give the T-28 some balls[:-]

I let you know how it goes...

Ibarnes,

Hello, I have been readyng your thread about ugrading your T-28. I have a few questions if I may?

You site a motor and ESC that you used costed less than $45.00? Could you clear up for the exact motor and ESC you used. I looked up the 50 amps ESC/c and the number for the motor too and it appears to far exceed $45.00. However, with that said HC website has so much I could have made an error while trying to trace yoout parts used.

Have you flown this unit yet? and if so how did it perform?

Thanks JPEE

I have ordered the below motor. It will match my physical size of the PZ-480.

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...r_eq:_AXi_2820

I did this as not to have to spend an addition $19.00 for the longer motor mounts for the PZ that are being sold on Ebay.

I think this will match up pretty close and give me more watts and power.

The ESC was HK-SSH50/10013, $12.00

Good luck

It seems like everyone is going for the 35-36C motor. I'm intriqued by the 35-42D because it does appear to be a direct fit. Anyone have experience with that motor in the T-28?

Hi bigdog,

A question for you my friend. I posted up the page a bit in a effort to find someone that had installed the HC motor in a T-28 and flew. Sounds like you did that? How did the plane handle compared to the stock motor?
Also can you tell what size ESC you had to back the new motor and what size you intend to go to if your changing it. A buddy owed me a favor and gave me 60 amper whooya so I know I am good but will the stock ESC handle the motor up grades you've been doing?

Thanks for anything you throw my way............JPEE

Hello Larry,

That should be arriving any day to my recollection. However, I have a few friends who got hung out to dry by Hobby City where they "fained" the stuff was stuck in Customs. They grieved the issue with Pay Pal and PP got their money back. So with that said, I dont know your time line but if it hangs in the air to long you might want to check it out.

Larry, they are the same Hobby City/HobbyKing. When you look on line you look up Hobby City. When it comes up on your screen it says and you get billed by Hobby King. Six and one half dozen of another ya know. I have received batteries and such in genernally no more than two on half to three weeks max! So your only out there like 10 working days so you do have a bit yet to wait.
I am as excited as you are waiting for YOUR motor so I can see how it does for you and get one too if you give it your blessings.

I will test it for watts and thrust measurements before I mount it. I think it will really wake up my T-28, and I have a home for the PZ 480 motor on another plane I have.

Good luck on you end...

Ok, I did it[:-]

Received my 35-42-1100kv motor today. It was a easy modification and only a few tweaks were needed. Before I mounted it I did the following motor tests:

prop_______thrust______wattage/amps_____voltage____notes
9x5 apc_____33 oz________210/19.0_________11.1_____20c battery
10x5 apc____46 oz________260/27.5_________11.1_____20c battery
10x7 apc____48 oz________288/29___________11.1_____20c battery
10x7 apc____59 oz ________412/36__________11.1_____30c battery
11x6 apc____48 oz________291/29.5_________11.1_____20c battery
11x6 apc____60 oz________430/37a__________11.1_____30c battery
12x5________88 oz________549/49a_________11.1______20c battery

reading were taken with a digital scale and Watt's up meter.

The pictures below are the motor installation.

You will need to:
1. Redrill mounting holes for the new motor in the old motor mount.
2. Dremil out the cowl to make room for the larger prop hub.
3. Add shims (washers) on the hub to move the prop out away from the cowl for clearance for the prop.
4. Check CG

The 50A speed control that I also ordered was damaged during shipping, so the largest one I have on hand is a 30a and I dont really want to burn it up so I guess I will need to wait untill I can get a 40/50a control (bummer)[]

Good luck to the ones that also upgraded to this motor.

Larry

Default RE: T-28 upgrade for PK-T28

I have found that the Turnigy SK 35-48 900 kv is a perfect motor for the Parkzone warbirds. The only modification required is opening up the hole in the Cowl. I have religiously used this motor on the F4U Corsair and the T-28. The original PZ motor mount lines up with 2 of the Turnigy motor holes on the and to date that has held the motor in place without any problems with loosening or vibration.

That same motor has now been used in the PZ ME-109, but does require some small and simple modifications. The motor mounts fine to the original metal motor mount, once again using two screws Since this plane has a cowl with a larger prop adapter, i took a hacksaw and cut off ~2mm off the end of the prop adapter - the side that that attaches directly to the prop shaft and bumps up against the prop. This allows everything to work great and you can use the original cowl.

The 35-48 is a very strong motor with big bearings and a 5mm shaft (SK version). The 900kv gives much "improved" performance over the stock motor without sacraficing battery life. If you want higher top end speed, get the 1100kv version of the motor.

Hope this helps,

JC

Default RE: T-28 upgrade for PK-T28

One thing that I discovered is that the motor mount must be in NEW condition. Check your propeller for balance. My first tests with a 10x7 APC GAS prop was a disaster. At 1/2 throttle it vibrated so badly that if shook the front wheel off the shaft.[:-]

I then went back and tightened the motor screws and replaced the prop with a new 10 x 7 E APC. Big differance, much smoother transisition from low to high.

I did some damage to the plastic motor mount when it vibrated badly on my testing. Got a new one and will try it again with the better APC prop.

My T-28 has a ton of hours on it and also noticed that the firewall that is glued to the fuse is cracked in 2 places. Don't know if the testing caused this issue but it needs attention. I think I can get the firewall (I hope) if not then I am looking at the aluminum motor mounts that are offered on Ebay and beefing up the firewall.

I think that the aluminum motor mount will add much to the strength of the system and not allow the vibration issues that the plastic offers.

Going forward from this point is new experience and $$

Default RE: T-28 upgrade for PK-T28

Tried a modification to the motor mount and it did eleminate about 98% of the vibration that I had with the newer motor.

I noticed that I have 2 cracks in the firewall that the motor mount attaches to with 4 screws. I contacted Park Zone and they advised me that the part is not a replaceable item and would need to replace the complete body.

I then tried the following fix for the cracks as this part is nylon plastic and not too much will stick to it.

I took a 1/8 ply and cut it to fit against the firewall drilled holes for the 4 screws and air holes for the electronics.

Made the motor mount screw a bit longer than stock and bolted it together sandwich style. I did not add any epoy or glue to the motor mount.

This fix worked for me and could also work for other that have cracked the firewall and landing gear area.

Since my front landing gear was in tack I didnt worry about bringing the plywood down to that area, but could easily grind off the existing steering block and make a new one attached to the plywood.

Johnpcunningham,

You state that this motor is a perfect fit for the PZ models. Since the dimentions for the motor are the same and the only difference is the shaft length 61mm vs 67mm. I do agree that it is a little less powerful due to the lower Kv rate and may be better on the batteries than the 1100Kv model.

Are you mounting with the shaft backwards into the motor mount? I have read that you can drive the have into the motor to get it to come out the other end which would eliminate the need for the big prop adapter and nut.

What kind of amps are you drawing with which prop?

After my tests with the 3542c, 1100Kv it might just be a bit too much for the T-28. I know that's what the throttle control is for but I like going fast

Lb,

I mount the motor with the shaft pointed towards the fuse and use the supplied prop adapter (Turnigy). The sotck motor mount is used and the only moodification is opening up the cowl hole where the motor comes out.

I've run both the 900kv and the 1100kv Turnigy 3848 in all of the latest PZ warbirds. The 1100kv motor has much more top end speed thatn the 900kv, but at the cost of reduced flight time due to the hogher current draw. Since my goal was a balance of battery life and perfromance, I use the 900kv motor. The performance of this motor is slighly better than the stock motor but most importantly, it is a much better motor:

1) It is all aluminum and steel construction with large 5mm Japanese bearings.
2) Runs very quiet and smooth
3) Inexpensive when compared to other equivalent brand named motors
4) Strong and reliable - I have yet to have one fail
5) Use all stock parts - ESC, motor mount, cown, spinners, etc. Only modification is the hole opening of the cowl where the prop shaft comes out

I ran some preliminary voltage and current numbers a whil back but do not have them on hand. I can tell you that I run both 10x7 or 10x8 Airscrew prop on the Corsair and T-28. For the ME-109, I run the 3 blade 10x8 as well as an 11x7 with the PZ 2-blade spinner. Flight times are equivalent to the stock setup
