Firebat converted to nitro, Any suggestions
 

I have a great planes firebat that I just picked up. The battery seems really heavy and overall I am doubtful of it's capability to fly well. I have deep nitro roots and my norvell .061 seems like it would mount up nicely. Does anyone have any experience with this or making any other mods to improve the flight.

P.S. I have a second airframe that I have considered mounting two of the old Midwest RK-049 fan units to. THey will fit under the wing next to the fuse like F-18 engines and with norvell engines, they make decent thrust. Since this is my first " foam slow flyer" do you think it would self destruct from the weight/forces that would result?

Well, this is an electric discussion group, so I don't know if you'll find much in the way of glow engine advice here :)

According to Great Planes, the Firebat flies fine as-is. However, there were lots of posts and threads regarding the poor flying characteristics of the Firebat some months ago. I don't know if the problems were resolved, if the plane has such a bad reputation now that nobody will buy one, or if the majority of Firebat buyers these days aren't online...

IMHO, at 25oz, the Firebat is a little overweight for a direct drive Speed 400, especially in pusher configuration. It would be a much better flier at 20oz.

I read a thread by SRA FoamFlyer that he had a Norvel on a Firebat.

I'd check with him.

He mentioned it in a thread he did when he was selling some 1/2A planes.

Wrong category?
 

I guess I may have placed this in the wrong category. I just thought that you guys would be the ones that had them. Any suggestions on where I should look for advice?

hey rupert14, heres your prob you got a electric plane and a glow mind........there are a few of us, do some searches, a guy named gregair did a crazy max with a Norvel .061 and he seemed real happy with it after fuel proofing it... come on over to 1/2a & 1/8a forum and see if anyone has done it??...Rog
