Default New Gas Engine from RC Showcase/ZDZ

The new ZDZ 40B is a low cost entry level gas engine for Giant Scale model aircraft. RC Showcase and ZDZ Modelmotor designed this engine with the beginning Gas Engine user in mind.
This new engine design is based on the extremely successful ZDZ 40 RV engine. The ZDZ 40 B is only being sold as a complete package, everything that is needed is included in the engine package:

2.4 cubic inch gas engine, spark plug, Falkon Electronic auto advancing ignition, 1400 ma 4.8 V NiCad battery pack, ignition switch with charge port, battery charger, 20 x 8 Bambula Power Prop and a prop drill jig. A Bisson Customer side mount inverted muffler completes the package.

All the user has to provide is the gas tank and fuel tubing.

This is an EASY engine to start, Electric starters or spring starters are NOT needed. The Falkon electronic ignition makes hand starting is simple and fool proof.

Deliveries start in November 2002

Default New Gas Engine from RC Showcase/ZDZ

Is the engine design different from the standard ZDZ-40 side exhaust? If so, please tell us about it.

Default Price?

What about the ballpark price for such an item?

Default Cool!

To add to visioneer_one's list of questions (which I too am interested in the answers), for anybody with answers or opinions about them:

What kind of carb?

What difference will the reed-valve make in terms of performance and engine longevity?

How loud is the side-mount Bisson muffler compared to the wrap-around inverted Bisson muffler?

Any chance of offering the wrap-around muffler as an upgrade?

Default New Gas Engine from RC Showcase/ZDZ

Here is the little bit I know about the setup:
The intake ass'y usually used on the ZDZengines , is a machined, polished hardened intake disc-which is driven by the crank-
This is in my book the best intake setup offered by anyone.
It is also expensive to produce , as compared against reed valve setups..
The RCS people elected to offer a lower cost setup, by replacing the intake assy with a ss reed valve intake ass'y.
The remainder of the engine is the same as before.
Carb is the Walbro used on the 40and 50.
My new 50 is extremely easy to start and setup with this carb.
There will be a little weight savings - -not much- using the lighter intake setup.
As for the muffler - I don't know -- Best guess is typical in cowl sound levels-
The inclusion of prop, muffler, batt and charger -makes this a incredible bargin in my book.
As for power - I will buy one and setup the engine in another prototype for a Gas powered FAI 2x2 mm model.
Having looked at all the possibilities for gas engines in a 2x2mm model- I saw nothing that would work --except a 2.4 engine -and the lighter the better.
For the ARF flyers - This also looks good - The carb is set away from the cowlings making a very compact arrangement.-
Looks like it would all go into a scale P51 - (if one existed at about 1000 squares!)
All in all- quite a deal.

Default ZDZ 40B Sportsman Details

I posted the original last night and I guess that I was more tired than I thought, as I left out some key information.

Price is $430.00... Complete package.

The major difference is that the 40B has a reed intake valve instead of the standard ZDZ rotary disc valve. There is a substantial cost savings by not using the disc valve. There will not be any penalty in longevity. Performance is a bit less than the 40 RV and the throttle transitions are similar to other reed valve engines; good, but not great.

Dimensions of the 40B are almost the same as the 40 RV. I have (or will shortly put this on our website)

The Carburetor is the same as on the 40 RV, Walbro.

Our goal was to offer a low cost, light weight and high tech engine that represents the state of the art in Gas Engine Power for Giant Scale RC models.

It was designed with the beginner gas engine user in mind: A simple to use Giant Scale Gas Engine .

Default ZDZ 40B Sportsman

Oh yes, the question about a wrap around inverted Pitts muffler for this engine.

We are offering it with the side mount because it is much less expensive to make than a wrap around muffler and the sound levels are about the same, as the total can volume is about the same. RC Showcase is looking at offering an inverted Pitts (wrap around) muffler but there will be a cost premium penalty.
