2 or 4....?
I am sure this question has been asked a million times, but I cant find any former posts using the search feature. I decided on a Top Cap ARF and wondered what the best power plant would be and why. I see a lot of guys using 4 stroke engines on fun fly planes which was unheard of some years back....everyone wanted throttle response and high RPM of the 2 strokes. I want extreme 3D performance and hovering.
What would you guys and gals use on the Top Cap ARF and why?

I really like my topcap arf. I have a YS 63 4stroke in her. It flies awesome. I can't remember a better setup. Just don't use Hitcech 225 w/ nylon gears on the rudder. They will strip. Luckily I landed just in time. I wound't put one one the elevator either. I have been using standard JR 517BB on the rudder w/ great success.
Mine ARF weights in at a 4.5lbs. according to a 10year old fruit scale. So I don't know ifs it accurate. If its not accurate I would like to build a kit to get it around to 4-4.5lbs and flight performance would be even better.

I had a MVVS .40 in my SuDoKhoi... It was an awesome engine.... Maybe just slightly underpowered..... It would hover at 2/3rd throttle and pull out at full.... I would love to try a MVVS .49.... Go with the pipe option... I bet it would rock... Just make sure you use fuel with 5% nitro or less.... These engine's hate high nitro fuel.

Holy crap! $270 for the YS63???!!! Is it really worth all that? I am not trying to be a professional pilot....I just want a good reliable engine for some fun 3D and hovering.
Is there a better price for it out there or is that just about the jist of it?
There has to be a decent engine out there that falls somewhere between a TT46 and a YS63.

They may be heavy, but they're powerful. I'm convinced there's not a better 4 stroke out there. I'm currently running a ys 91 on a four star 60. (its a racer) The coolest thing is because of the pressurized fuel system, you don't need a muffler. They sound great without one too. Haven't had experience with the 63 but if it's anything like the 91 I'd definately give it a spin.

I've got a Irvine .53 in my SuDoKhoi now.... and it is awesome.... only around $100.... and it'll turn a 12.25 x 3.75 prop at 13,700 rpm with a mousse can muffler.... Awesome performance, great throttle transition and competitive price.... Try JustEngines. Great Deal..

Best place to get a YS 63 is Centralhobbies.com $240 plus shipping. People just don't know where to buy them at $240 that only $16.00 more than Horizon sells the .72
I took mine to the P.O. to see how much it weighs. I was hearing that the YS 63 weighs around 19.5-21oz. So I had to check it out.
total weight is exactly 18.25oz w/ fuel filter & check valve and fuel lines., muffler, propnuts, OS Type F Glow plug, and thrust washer. Ladyflyer will back me up. She weighed hers and she got the exact same thing.(w/ that weight all you have to do it mount it and hook up your fuel tank lines. ) Yes it is a about 1.5oz heavier than a .72. to the posted weight. But I would like to weight a .72 w/ muffler, propnuts, thrust washer, and see how much they really are apart.
I use byron 20/20.
I RPM figures are 10,800 peak w/ 14x4 Zinger. I set it at 10,200 for flight.
13x6 APC Peak is over 12,000 RPM I stopped leaning it out at 12,200 and I fly it @11,500. I would like to see a Saito 72 swing a 13x6 APC prop at 11,500 and not burn up.
I am not trying to start a YS63 or Saito 72 debate. I just know what my YS 63 will do and how much it weighs exactly.

PaulSwany,
Where did you get the Irvine 53 for around $100 bucks?
That sounds like a great deal!!
Kurt64
I've got the YS.53, I plan on putting it on the Aeron. It's a strong engine, but would I buy it again? I think I'd stick with a 2 stroker and by a kit and covering with the extra cash!

I have OS 46FX on my Sudi and Morris Mustang and they will hover all day long! I beleave the TT 46 would also be fine but I don't think they have quite the power of the OS.
If you want to get realy caried away just spend that money on a good Sport Jett .50 and I'm sure you won't need that big ole prop either.
I like 2 strks. so I guess I'm biased. I have a MDS .58 on my new Pizazz and it is a hoss for 90 bucks!!!

Hideho and good morning Kurt,
Yup, and the Sig Ultimate had the wings flown off it until a wee catastrophic upper wing failure recently...but thats OK, I just happen to have another one built waiting in the hangar to replace it.
One of the best damm flyers I have ever owned, thanks again Kurt.
And FWIW, Kurts one of the good guys to trade with!

Thanks for the kind words Mike....glad you enjoy the plane!
That is one that I should have kept. I would like to build another, but my building time is almost non-existant. I have enough problems finishing an ARF much less a kit.

I just bought an Irvine .53 from Justengines for $110 shipped. I think that deal if officially over now. I don't thing the regular price is that much more. My LHS offered to get me the Irvine through SIG. He was going to charge $130 plus tax. At the time $110 sound like a better deal. Now that I'm about to get the Topcap I guess I'll have to start saving up for another one.

Cool Billy!!! Hey... to get an extra couple of horsies, take apart your muffler and remove the baffle.... you might want to seal up all the mating surfaces with some hi temp silicon.... And for a few more horsies... add a header and mousse can muffler.... awesome combo...
