Default EF Edge 540T/YS 63

I'm getting an Extreme Flight Edge 540T and i'm going to put a YS 63 in it. Anyone else flying this combo? Should I go with a wide blade or sport prop? Anyone using a 2.5" Tru Turn Spinner on this thing?

I'm using a Pro Zinger 14x4 on mine. Also tried APC 13x4W, 14x4W, and a Master Airscrew 13x6 nylon scimitar. The 14x4W seemed to be too much prop for mine. The Zinger is just personal preference out of the other three. They all seem to be a good match for this combo.

I have a Tru Turn spinner on mine, but it is a 2". They make a wide blade 2" model that will fit all of the above props except the scimitar. The cut is wide enough for the scimitar, but not deep enough.

I also recieved the 2 inch Wide Blade Cut Tru Turn spinner. Hope to put it on this weekend if Hurricane Gene will let me. Have assembled it/Checked Fitting with all props Eric/Depfife mentioned, The 13/6 Nylon MA Scimitar I filed down the contack areas on the prop where it contacted the spinner, I think I also had to file some areas of the Zinger 14 inch props or the MA 13/6 Wood Scimitar forgot which one as as the hubs are very thick on one mabey just the MA's Nylon and Wood, Hopefully not weakening the props to a point where it will matter. Going to still work with the apc 13/4 W for awhile.

I got the Tru Turn Spinner and was perturbed as I spent the money for the adapter kit for the YS 63 and the Bolt that goes in the front of spinner is too long to work with the adapter kit. So I called them and they said I will have to cut the bolt. So I also ordered the shorter bolts they sell and hope this will keep me from needing to cut the bolt, But I orignally thought that If I'm buying the YS 63 specific kit the bolt would work without cutting, go figure.

I know this is a hobby with many building skills/mechanical skills needed but that adapter kit was not cheap like $15 for two nuts.

Was I expecting too much?

Nah, I've had the same problem with Tru Turn. Screw was too long so I cut it, then I needed replacements so I bought 6 that cost around $4 but then it cost another $8 for shipping. And when I got the envelope, shipping set them back something like $0.89. A guy from my club bought a wildhare and dropped $115 on the spinner. It's insane. By the way, what size screw did you need? I guess the ironic part about the whole situation for me is that I roomed with a guy from Pasadena, TX (where the Tru Turn Plant is located) and his family owns a large machining plant. I need to ask him, but I'm sure they've done work for Tru Turn. Now I can't wait till December when some more Edge's will come in. Luckily I've put my name on the waiting list....

I wont try the spinner again until this weekend depending on Hurricane conditions and prep work ect. I ordered a few extra srews from tru turn in different sizes.

Tru Turn should at least note on the website that you might have to cut the bolt even thought you buy the adapter kit. Would save phone calls and greef on both sides us and them. I thought I might be assemblying it wrong when it did'nt fit.

Did you have any trouble balancing the airplane with a YS 63?

With a 720mAh NIMH battery shoved as far back in the wing as it would go, mine balanced a little less than 1/2" behind the spar. I eventually mounted my battery behind the wing on the fuse to get it back farther.

If you have not already found it, take a look at this thread. It has lots of info on the EF Edge.

Here's what I think I'm going to do. I'm going to stick with sport props, either a 13x6, 13x4, or 14x4 and then I can just use a regular plastic spinner. For a rudder servo, I'm going to use a Hitec 625MG. Overkill but they weigh quite a bit. May also put one on elevator later on. Then I might also try some CF gear from JWilliams to lighten up the front end, though I doubt it will make that big of difference in regards to the CG.

Well guys, thanks to your info and some I obtained in the YS support fourm, I went ahead an ordered a YS 63 this morning. Now all I have to do is pass the time waiting for my EF 540T to arrive hopefully sometime in December. One things for sure, it's going to be a long wait...

I have an EF edge and YS 63 combination and really like it. I have been flying it all summer and I am slightly noseheavy. The 625 MG will help, but the CF gear will not make much difference in CG. I run a 635 karbonite gear servo on my rudder and never starve for deflection and I do lots of high rudder maneuvers. I run 30% nitro Coopers fuel and an APC 13 X 4 W fun fly prop. I tried the 14 X 4W but that slowed my spool time and not my preference, but the YS63 will turn it. If you do not want to wait for Ef to get these back in stock I sometimes see them for sale in the forum here.

Yeah, I decided that the CF gear wouldn't make that much of a difference so I also ordered a pair of wheel pants to put on it. I saw a picture of it on the thread about building the airplane that you did and really liked the way it looked. I'm probably going to put a 625mg on rudder and a 635 on elevator, i really like that servo. I think that'll do enough to move the CG back and then I can try moving the receiver battery around in the wing to adjust it later on. Thanks for your and info though, i really appreciate it and everyone elses. By the way, do you have the new (S version) YS 63? If so, any problems with it?

I have been flying my YS 63 on my Burrito all summer. I have tried way too many props and have been happiest with the standard 13-6 APC. It responds excellent and it feels more stable in hover than most other props I have tried. It hovers my burrito at just over half throttle. I was using a ProZinger 14-4 and it hovered at well under half throttle but it didn't accelerate as well and it wasn't as stable. The 14-4 Pro-Z was my previous favorite before I tried the APC 13-6.
When it come to building and balancing your EF Edge, don't get your CG too far back. It flies much better when it is balanced barely forward of neutral (a hair of down to maintain inverted).

Did you guys swap out the tank for a hayes? Did you have to seal it with silicon?

I put a 8oz Hayes on mine. Did not do any mods to the tank - no problems.

I think I like the 14/4 the best, it's slower to spool but it hangs with less throttle work. The 13/6 works well with a slighly higher throttle stick and a little more movement.

I used the Dubro 8oz and wrapped it with straping tape. It only gets about 8 minutes safely, the YS is thirsty for 30% heli. Jeff W.

I use a 12 oz hayes with a 2oz header tank strapped on the side for insurance it also keeps foaming down. I hate dead sticking this plane it hasn't been to forgiving with me two stalls with repairs with my old engine. New OS 50 fsr is working A lot better.
