Default Magic... (crossing fingers)

OK, so we've got our first rain in weeks... which is par for the course.
Seems like every maiden flight I've ever gone for, it's rained, or been windy

I know the Magic isn't going to be wind friendly, just from looking at it.
Still... the desire to see the new plane fly pushes me on
(I know Magics will fly... I just want to make sure MY Magic will fly)

Magic
OS .46 SF
11x5 APC
CG @ 5", no lead required.
Feels like a shade over 4 llbs... I'll weigh in at the field.

I'm hoping to catch a ten minute break in between gusts and showers.

I've taken no pictures... you've seen Magics before. That, and I'm superstitious.

If you're lucky, I'll have a cool crash pic for later.
If *I'm* lucky, I'll have a fun new plane to fly.

Later,

Chris

From my personal experience, I believe you are going to have a great fun fly airplane.

I don't think we will get to see the cool crash picture unless you get hit by "the dumb thumbs".

I fly regullarly with another Magic owner, and it handles wind better than you would think. Matter of fact, if the wind is really up the Magic is the plane we fly.

Good Luck. You're going to like the Magic.

Ditto to what Latch said. I was soooo nervous when I first starting flying my Magic; especially in the wind.

Now I love flying it in the wind. I challenge myself to flying it in a head wind.... backwards!

You'll have a great time!

Mike

PS- To give you an idea of my experience level at the time, the Magic was my second plane!

Default Sweeet!

(Short version)
Hey, it worked!

(Book length)

After waiting for a suitable hole in the weather, I unloaded, grabbed a pin,
did my range check in a light mist, and started my preflight.
DOH! Elevator servo arm screw missing. (rummages in box)
Cool... I've got spares. Quick fix, and I finally put the wing on.
Throws to specs, but -50% expo dialed in, for caution. (Don't like rates)
(I was gonna weigh in, but there was a herd of guys under the
shed where the scale is, shooting the breeze, before setting up
tents for tomorrow's SPA pattern contest.)

One of the club's top pattern guys takes off with a Knife about now,
surprising me. (never pictured him as the 3D/hover type. Nice)
I took time out to watch- and wonder, "How long before I can..."
I'm in no real hurry to takeoff anyhow, with the unexpectedly large audience.
Nobody else is flying, and it's still drizzling, on and off.

By now there's a small crowd around me... most have never seen
a Magic before, except in ads. I warn them that this is a maiden
flight, with a pilot who never even tried to hover before,
so don't judge the plane by my "test & trim" flight, or against
the Knife that was just expertly displayed by 'flyer_X'

I got a remark about how HUGE my throws were, which worried me
a bit, but I've got expo, and am reasonably smooth @ center stick anyway.
I held full aileron and worked the flap/spoiler knob, just to
see the guy shake his head some more. It does look pretty wicked
"Yeah", I say, "That's a lot... hope it's OK"
I carefully centered the flap/spoil again, and got ready to 'just do it'.
After tinkering with the engine a bit, I place it on the runway
for a cross-field takeoff, cuz I now had a feeling it would leap right up.
Smoothly to about 3/4 throttle, after a 6-10 foot roll, she's airborne!

Why I was worried, I don't know. I always get first flight jitters.
I was around the pattern once, before I noticed I hadn't trimmed.
I went hands-off, and realized it was because I didn't HAVE to!
At 1/3 throttle, the plane is absolutely neutral.
More throttle, it climbs, less, it descends. Just like it should.
I never went past 3/4 throttle, because I didn't add flying wires yet,
nor did I seal any of the surfaces yet. I just lazed around,
mostly 1/3 throttle, tight loops, nice rolls, quick snaps, etc...
I half-heartedly attempt a hover at 75 feet, and decided that yes, it IS
going to be harder than it looks, and take lots of practice, for sure.

The engine is overkill for the plane, and verticals are
out of sight, so it's simply a matter of practice and more practice.
I was just thinking to experiment with inverted and spins, when
I noticed I was getting pretty wet, and so was the 8U. ARGH@#$@ More rain!
After one low pass (idle set too high), I trimmed idle and came in
for a nice greasy full-stall three pointer. I was so tickled,
I took off and landed twice more, to make sure it wasn't a fluke.
Wow. You can land this thing with next to nothing for rollout. (grass)

Can't wait to get back out, when it isn't raining.
(At least the wind died almost completely down for the 1st flight)
This thing is gonna be a blast!

Oh well... no cool crash pics, thanks to the preflight ritual. Sorry

I don't know what the expiration date is on my Magic, but
I know I'll have a helluva time flying it until that day comes

Chris,
Yup, they sure are fun! I love mine! Wait to you land it into a 15mph wind and land it at your feet with 6" to spare!

Wrap some non-waxed dental floss around the joint on the landing gear next to the wheels. Then coat it in epoxy. This will help it survive longer.

The landing gear is the weak link of the Magic.

I just keep thinking about the old saying : The winds you're friend" Good at time, but not the best for heli's. I understand, thats when I break out my two line stunt kites, with kites you pray for wind. But with heli's & planes not always.

Pugs... RE "Twin Magic": Can't wait to see it. Make some time man, I wanna see it fly
(Then of course, I can weasel it off ya, when you get bored with it.)

Latch, MHawker, Ben: After flying it, yeah, it'll be fine. I got a couple small gusts, no biggee.
The lightness, and flat-bottom wing worried me, I guess. No BIG gusts on landing and I'll be fine.

Latch RE: landing gear: Wouldya believe I did ONE side, and forgot to do the other? DOH!
Before I fly it again, for sure. It *does* look/feel pretty flimsy.

KC: I never saw a Fazer fly, but I've heard nothing but good things.

Culverson: I don't mind the wind, most times... but I do like to get to know the plane first

I agree you should know the plane before you send it up in gale force winds to play. KCFB
