Snakeman builds a new OMP 65" yak 55
As many of you know, i love the yak, the omp 65" yak that is, so i hear they have a new yak out that blows my old favorite away so naturally i gotta have one or 12. Here is a constrictor ARF build.
1) the box
2) the parts
3) nice tempered aluminum landing gear, no more wobblies!

Hey Snakeman, I'm glad you got the new Yak safe and sound. I think you are going to really like the improvements over the older version Yak. Are you going to use your trusty YS 110 on this one?

Yes Mike, i am going to install a YS 110 S, and JR 8411 servos. Spectrum R700 Rx and thinking about going Lipo pack in the plane. This will be the first lane in a very long time to get all new equipment, usually the equipment lasts forever so it goes from the old plane into the new and there is usually a bit of slop as a result.

I'm just a little further along on my build than you are, Snakeman. Everything is hinged and sealed. One of the servo extensions to the tail was in backwards, no big deal correcting that. The only change I made was a longer horn on the ailerons because the supplied ones were 1/4" long and would have put the mount stud in the bevel in order to get the clevis pin over the hinge line. I used a 3/4" arm instead. I'm going to use an O.S. 1.20AX but will have to open the mount a bit to fit it in. On another thread, Mike said his 1.20 fit right in, but that's not the case with my plane. I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to mount my Spektrum AR7000 and the remote. Any suggestions?

Well,
I'm going to try the rcvr/ext rcvr setup on velcro like this. The rcvr antenna sticks into the right wing The switch lead and left aileron lead will be on a y harness so there will only be one connection to the rcvr from the left wing.

I love that plane. Too bad I let my larger engines go.[]
I can't wait to hear Steve compare the old Yak 54 and the new 55. I doubt there is anyone with more stick time on the old 65'er.

I also mounted my rx in the fuse opening behind the wing tube. That is the intended place and the easiest way is to use double stick velcro on the rx and a smooth plate like maybe 1/16" ply glued in the opening to make a floor.

Mike,
Did you have any CG issues with the 1.20AX? I'm still tail heavy with the engine at the front of the mount and a 1500mah battery in the left wing front compartment up against the wing tube. I was going to use a Macs muffler on the 1.20 but the CG was totally out of the question so I went with the stock muffler and the plane balances just outside of the recommended range. The macs muffler is 2.7 oz. and the stock muffler is 6.7 oz. It looks like I might have to put the battery in the forward fuse hatch, which will be a hassle due to the switch being already installed in the left wing.
Any suggestions?

Nope. I swapped it out with the OS .91 FX without any mods at all. Mounted it right in the same bolt holes. Did not change the cg noticeable at all. I have the battery in the left wing in front of the wing tube. Made a pocket with scrap balsa running parallel to the shear webbing and slid the battery wrapped in foam right in. Be sure to also put a piece of scrap balsa on R2 where the battery will sit so it does not bust through the ribs bouncing the plane around and such.

RE: Snakeman builds a new OMP 65" yak 55
used a full size servo for the throttle, i havent had much luck with small servos. And since this plane is going to have a real man's motor, it needs a man's size servo
Some really nice hardware in the box, the fuel tank has what looks to be stainless steel tubing. At first glance i thought it was the cheapo aluminum but when i tried to bend it it was obvious harder.
I wanted a new ys 1.10S but they are a bit hard to find these days. So i went with a used one i picked up from Bro Sloan
1) The rudder installed
2) Fuel tank installed
3) Full size throttle servo
4) Mighty YS 1.10 installed
5) Wing mount bolt inside the wing
6) Spectrum rx's in front and rear openings, foam taped to the covering
7) All done!
Ok the bird is done! And in record time too! Now when am i going to be able to test fly it? anybody wanna help me put some 350 chevy heads back on and install a new timing chain? Its been cold outside too!
The yak weighs in on the scale at 7 pounds 8 oz, thats with a 5.4 oz 1600MAH NIMH which i hope to change to lipo soon.
This ARF has been one of the easiest builds ive done. the hardware was great, but i did scrap the CA hinges in favor on my favorite robart hinge points. I used everything else. The covering job and scheme is awsome! I look forward to flying it soon, but i'm a little scared that it will fly so much better than the old yak and i have a ton of spare old 65" yaks I have 6 spare yaks which include 2 ARC's and 4 good used one i purchased. I also have another 4 that are in a state of somewhat disrepair. None of them are beyond repair, i have even started fixing the original one whith the covering scheme i loved so much.
