Default nelson "version" question

OK, so SS and LS are pretty self-explanatory.

I have a grand total of ONE Nelson Q40 engines, acquired in various trades. I was thinking about dabbling in Q40 just a bit. I know it's a SS, the original owner had it before the LS ever hit the scene.

However, in an online auction the other day, I saw this heading:
NELSON Q-40 SS with latest good case

How does one without a background in the Q40 Nelsons know what era case one has? (I've had SS Nelson Q500's and even before that, Nelson .15's (QM)- but not enough of them to know how one knows which is the "latest good case"...)

Just curious, that's all.

One with a good case? well that is kinda subjective, basically they are saying is that it could be upgraded to an LS if you so wanted to.

Cases can get "tweaked" in crashes and be off a little. You notice its starting to lose a little so you put in a new top end, and its no better. A tweaked case will never run right, well, it won't be competitive anyway.

I do know that there have been a couple of different "neck" lengths - by that I mean where the venturi goes. I've seen two separate length venturis, think my case is the shorter of the two types.

I'm not worried, just wondering what I have. I will probably find out in the spring how this one runs.. it was 12 degrees out this morning here, ain't no way I'm going to fly out in THAT sort of weather...

I'm getting too old for that.
