Made a winding board. wind the carbon tow around pegs and you have custom tapered spar caps.

Made some wing skins. The connecting tabs will be removed later. The layup will be 5.7 oz. spread tow dbox 1.4 oz outer glass then wood skin inside for first vacuum. The second layup will put carbon tow into spar relief area with .75 oz glass on top of all then vacuum.

Kind of stalled out on Mubu for the moment. I was approached by the guy that designed the wing and the saw prop from Germany and he asked if I wanted to work with him on a new design that is kind of risky but with big payoffs if it all works, I said sure!

It is a real different design that his computer models show being about 4 seconds quicker and 15 mph faster than current models, again that is if it all works. That would put it down into about 48 or 49 seconds on FAI course.

I am working on a test model that will be finished in a couple of weeks and will meet with Travis Flynn and Troy Peterson to start working out some of the systems, pretty fun stuff.

being I cant fly Q40 stuff around here and also cant afford to do both I am selling off some of my Q40 stuff, I know about the classified adds but this is kind of Q40 related only. I have,
4- DS3421 servos
1- DS3517 mg servo
1- DS368 BB servo
1- NES 3121 servo
1- NES341 servo

and 6 Q40 motor mounts

400.00 shipped in US

I will keep informed here on progress of new model and am hoping to use for US team in Austria in 2014.

Well I have been working on another F5D model that is very complicated, we have flown some test planes that have had mixed success and I am feeling it may be a bit to complicated for the rigors of completing a full race of flights without a problem. I am going to continue working with it but want to try out this wing also. I have made a pod mold for a pusher set up as that is what this is designed for and have a hobbyking motor/esc set up for a speed of about 150 to 160 mph. I am laying up a light model that we hope to fly at the next Whittier EF1 race.

Dave, you do some of the most interesting modeling. I enjoy it to the max. Can't wait to see this finished.

Out of mold, 250 grams with pod should be about 650 grams ready to fly with hobbyking set up. Quality is okay, next one will be better. Now to paint some trim, will be very patriotic.

Getting ready to fly, Installing servos, loading pod with drive stuff, cutting surfaces loose and gluing pod to wing. I hope to fly next weekend unless I decide to build a folding prop mold with the 7/10 prop I have. I am afraid this will break a prop every time it lands without the ability to fold.

This pod will only be used a few times as the final F5D version will use a different motor and drive, this will let me know if it flies with cheap parts at risk.

The Mubu Flew...

It actually flies really well but getting it into the air as a pusher is real tricky, It weighs 800 grams as is and needs to weigh 1000 grams minimum for the class and I think it would be a toss up to get it going at 1000 grams. I am going to go with my original idea of being a puller, I think this will make launch much better with power on and good air over surfaces at low speed.

Time to make one with full power and tractor, should be quick as I already made all the molds. Today I made some plexiglass templates to cut material.

The German/Austrian guys are going in the low 50 second range with a contest fast time of 51 seconds and that is on the same course as a F3D runs on, cant imagine if they were not limited to 1000 watts/minute.

Looks like team trials will be in San Diego on the first weekend in October, although I have no chance and could not afford to go if I made it I am going to try just to cross off of my bucket list...

Thanks DK....

Tractor version coming along nicely. I will take some pics of wing skin layup suggested by the German designers but you will notice there is no wood skin in front of spar or in elevator/aileron area. There will be spread tow carbon on 45 for Dbox area from spar forward. The wood is also left out of aileron/elevator for spread tow to keep surface as light as possible to help prevent flutter and give some room for RDS linkage for no external linkage.... we will see.

Layed up some wing skins today using spread tow carbon, next time I will buy the expensive stuff as the cheap is a pain to work with. The layup is 1.4oz glass at 90 degrees then 5.7oz spread tow at 45 degrees for the dbox and aileron/elevator surfaces. Tomorrow I will lay in the tapered spar caps using 12K tow, it will have 16 tows at center going to 3 tows at tip and then 1.4oz inner glass.

Time to work on the other secret project (will show when time) but had the prop made on 3d printer to see what it looks like before mold cut.

Here is the other thing I am working on. First pic is kind of end design second and third pic is a test plane almost ready to go with cheap chinese stuff to crash. Finished model will have sleek F5D long skinny thin wing. The wing design that we are playing with now is only 6mm thick about 2/3 span
