Default Matney's Napier Revisited

The Napier was raced at Goddard this past weekend.

It finished second in Q40 and had a fast time of 1:04.25, which is a personal best.

It's a winner!

Default Matney's Napier Revisited

The first Napier flew so good that I started another one this morning.

The picture shows the wing being vacuum bagged.

The pictures show the approximate location for the 2 spars and the carbon fiber laminate.

Use these locations when the swept forward gear is used.

I've now got two Napiers almost ready to paint. Here is the first of the two:

Work has begun on the plug for this version of the Napier. The wing was extended and the tail surfaces were changed. It should be available for the upcoming building season.

Here is Kevin's site.

I've started on the paint job.

They are now primed with a white 2 part epoxy primer (KlassKote).

A question for Kevin since he is checking up on this thread, sorry if it seems like a hijack. With the growing popularity in Warbird racing, have you given any thought to producing some glass/foam warbird racers? We have been averaging 35 guys per race and the end of season two day race in September has 75 registered pilots including Richard Verano, Chip Hyde and Tatsu Yamada ( YS ). Looks like there may be a market there.

This morning the Napiers were wet sanded in preparation for another coat of paint.

The process of wet sanding is where the super finishes happen.

I used gloss black Krylon paint for the trim.

The clear coat was sprayed on tonight.

I used a clear coat intended for spot panel and small area repairs.

Default Matney's Napier Revisited

The Napier was raced this past weekend (9/19/15 and 9/20/15) in Goddard, KS. There were 25 modelers at the race and the model finished 5th! The model was as fast as any of the Q40 racers present during the race.

[SUB][/SUB]I flew variations of the model with a 16" horizontal stabilizer and one with a 15.5" horizontal stabilizer (tail). The version with the larger tail was easier to takeoff. The one with the 15.5" tail was more susceptible to nose over but otherwise flew fine. The version with the smaller tail required a further forward ( about 3/8" to 1/2") landing gear location than the model with the 16" tail.

I've upgraded the tail to 16" as the model with a larger tail took off easier than the smaller one.

All I need is some nice weather for some test flights. The pictures were taken in between freezing rain.
