Default Typical QM40 wing span?

What's the span of a current QM40 plane? Something like a Vendetta or a Dago Red

Max wing span is 56 inches. Min wing area is 400 sq in. Every contemporay Q40 I am aware of is just short of the max span. My pole cat is 55 3/4.

Most are currently at, or close to 56"

Whether it works better or not (and most think it does) all of the current designs are just under the 56" max span allowed. For a given area (and most are just above the 400 squares required) a higher aspect ratio planform will be more efficient in the turns (due to lower induced drag) while slightly slower on the straights (due to increased frontal area). The increased efficiency in the turns seems to outweigh the slower straightaway speed.

I was flying an old short-wing Napier for a while and it would run with anything in the straightaways (maybe even a bit faster) but all the long-wingers were able to easily pass me in the turns. This high-aspect ratio stuff started with the old Formula Ones and I think that someone said there was a 10% reduction in cornering drag with the longer wings (or something to that effect).

Every little bit helps!

Thanks guys.

It wasn't really about the aerodynamics... it was about shipping costs... and at these wing spans, shipping is going to be a killer if I want to have a composite Q40 plane sent from the US to Europe.

By the way, has anyone tried one of the two piece wing/stab designs from Bruce DeChastel? Any thoughts or remarks?

Rudeboy,

I haven't seen one of the two piece wings from Bruce, but I did have one of his Polecats and I can honestly say its one of the fastest (if not the fastest) q40's currently available.

Bruce is, or will be shortly, moving back to Australia. Not sure on the shipping from there, but it might be better than from the states.

I would not hesitate in buying one of Bruces' two piece wings. My only concern would be a slightly heavier weight, but the polecats have all been right at, or slightly below weight. I had to add nearly an oz too mine to get it up to 4 lbs. If you want, you can glue that two halves together after you get it for a one piece wing.

Contact Bruce, he will be very helpful.

Yes, in 1987 on my Stinger. The induced drag of a wing is inversely proportional to the span squared, assuming that you aren't doing something to screw up the aerodyamics at the wing root. At that time typical F1's were about 50 " span, while my Stinger had a 58" wing. This reduced induced drag by about 25% in the turns.

I have seen and tested a two piece wing from Bruce.... They work great and all his planes coming out now are two piece, if you want it to be one piece, mix up some epoxy and dab it in the center section, pull together, whalla, one piece...
Bruce has informed me shipping cost from Austraila to the US will remain the same at 35.00 bucks with Global Shipping. The exchange rate favors Bruce and he will ship anywhere in the world for close to if not the price I quoted. He said he will eat the over-charge on shipping if need be to keep people happy and to dispel those thoughts of out of country shipping problems and cost.
3-4 days and 35.00 from Austraila, thats great!!! I will second Daven's remark, Polecat is very fast!!! From what I hear, the Sumpthin-Else is also very fast, same wing and tail, different configuration, low wing T-tail.......
Hope that helps,

JZW
