I laid up a Rivets on Friday. Actually started mixing epoxy at 2pm and it was in the hot box by 5pm.

This was a more relaxed lay up than the Stinger. Mainly because it is a little less complex. The Rivets is symmetrical with the same size cheek cowls on both sides. The Stinger has a bump behind the engine and it has to get extra attention.

I took photos of each side before I joined the halves. You can see the cloth tab. It is not wetted out at this point. There is no tab on the nose bottom because I determined that I would just have to reinforce that after pulling the fuselage. Note that the cloth tab is on the bottom on one half and on the top on the other half.

Just before joining, I mix up a batch of microballoon and cabosil thickened epoxy (splooge) and put it in a glue syringe, and a 2 ounce batch of epoxy. I wet the tabs, then I put the splooge around the tail and nose area. I carefully put the sides together and slide them into position. Then I put the screws and wingnuts in the molds to hold it together.

Some of you may not have seen my 8 foot long "hot box". It iis made from 1" pink foam. It can hold two sets of molds or two wings. In the photos you can see the temperature gauge. You can see the ceramic heater. You can't quite see the aluminum deflector that splits the airflow.

It's 6am now. I plan to pull the fuselage by 10am and will post pictures, success or not.

I decided that 14 hours in the hot box was plenty, so I took the fuselage out.

The seams are not perfect, but they are pretty decent.

Here are photos of the fuselage before trimming the flashing.

That's the QM-15 version isn't it?

Mine is the Q-40 version that Dan Kane made the molds for.

I do like seeing where you placed the carbon fiber in the tail. I think I'm going to use some 5.8 or 6 oz carbon fiber cloth in that area on future lay-ups.

Love those neon colors.

I've got to cut some foam blanks. And I like to make a jig to cut them to size easily and accurately. Should get that done in a day or two.

I'm not sure what airfoil Dan used on the original. But looking at CompuFoil and looking at the fuselage, it looks like a MH24 or MH 25 will fit. I've got to find some legal size paper and print some templates.

I've gotten to where I can set up the FeatherCut in just a few minutes. Not as good as CNC or as convenient, but it's what I have.

I have all of the plans and the instruction booklet, plus I have the belly pan mold. I was just too tired to lay up the belly pan last night.

This fuselage is not perfect, but it's good enough. So stop drooling and start building. I know, I know, you have Quickies to build for this season of racing.

While the taped together one looked cool, this one looks ... real ... like it's going to fly someday soon.
