I failed to mention what size carbon laminate was used:

1) two pieces 0.007" x 1/2" x 48"
2) one piece 0.021" x 1/2" x 18

The last time I ordered the following sizes. They are big enough to do both Q-40 and Q-500 size models

Carbon Laminate
0.007" x 12" width x 60" length

http://www.cstsales.com/carbon_laminates_60.html

Carbon Laminate
0.021" x 0.5" width x 36" length

http://www.cstsales.com/carbon_Laminates_36.html

I don't think the size is critical so if you already have similar sizes use them instead.

Cut out the wing tips using a saw.

True the tips so that they fit to the cores.

Mix up some epoxy and glue on the wing tips.

The wing is laying upside down and some weight is applied to the tips.

This allows them to glue on relatively level with the top of the wing.

Use a French Curve to blend the wing tips into the wing.

Trim with a razor saw and sand as needed with a sanding block.

Rough out the tips with a sharp knife.

Check out the fit using a ruler. It should be relatively level with the top of the wing.

The following show shaping the leading edge.

Draw a line down the leading edge approximating the center.

Rough out the leading edge with sharp knife.

Follow with razor saw and sanding block.

The stinger wing weighed in at about 9.5 ounces complete with shaped wing tips and leading edge.

This is in the same range as a lightweight Q-500 wing.

A piece of 1/32" thick plywood was added where the nylon bolts will be located.

Some 2 ounce fiberglass cloth (9", 6", and 4" wide) was added on the top of the wing.

Some Skin-It was applied then 9" wide cloth. Then 6" wide and more Skin-it. Then 4" wide and Skin-It.

The balsa wing tips are fragile unless reinforced.

Some 2" ounce fiberglass and Skin-It was applied on the tips.

Scott, I saw a video of Lyle Larson building a plane with eliptical tips and I used the same method. Cut the tips at an angle and then add the "pie piece" to give 2 different angles on the joint to help distribute the load and make it a little stronger.
Also check the width of your ply reinforcement on the trailing edge. the canopy needs to fit over it.

I'm not quite sure what the "pie piece" is that you are referring to. Sounds like a full width spar at the tips. That should also provide some reinforcement.

The main area that is weak is the glue joint at the tips. The fiberglass provides reinforcement at that joint plus provides some protection against hanger rash.

I ran the grain of the wood with the span of the wing. This should make it less likely to break on the wood tip.

Check your email. I wanted to visit about thoughts on Q-40 rules, etc. [8D]

Thanks,

Scott Hartman

Looking good Scott. Thanks for doing the thread. It's a LOT better than an instruction sheet.

I'm now including stab wood slotted for 1/64th plywood with the kits. Hopefully that saves a little work.

The ailerons are made by marking the approximate size on the sheeting. The ailerons were made approximately 10" long . They were 1 3/8" at the widest end and 1 1/8" at the narrow end.

A red line is marked about 1/4" in front and behind the blue line. This is for the 1/4" thick balsa stick.

Cut out the ailerons allowing for the balsa sticks.

Cut the sticks to fit and glue them to the aileron and the wing. Don't glue the two sticks together.

Pin and tape the surfaces in place as needed. Allow to dry.

Scott, Have you considered making Skinned hinges??? They are very easy to make if you are fiberglassing the wing. And they look so Cool!!!

I may try skinned hinges on the Proud Birds that I am building.

I just figured that a significant number of people will finish the Stinger with a film finish like Monokote.

I've seen the article on NMPRA.org. It looks cool but I haven't tried them yet.

Install some temporary hinges (pieces of plastic milk carton).

Some micro-balloons and epoxy filler were applied to address a less than perfect glue joint fit.

Dubro Heavy Duty Strip Aileron Horns (558) are used on the model.

Drill 1/4" diameter holes through to the top of the wing for the installation of the aileron horns.

Cut slots for the rod and test the fit.

Bend a right and left hand set of aileron horns.

Trim the rod to length with a Dremel cut off disk.

Shape the edge until it is tapered and will fit in a future slot in the aileron.

Use a 3/4" diameter hole saw to drill holes for 3/4" diameter dowel pieces.

You don't need a power tool for this. Just use your fingers to turn the bit.
