Default 2s lipo & losi reg for rx pack

Those of you running 2S lipo & 6.0v/5A Losi regulator,I’ve gotsome questions.

>>

Looking at the Losi picture/specs, I noticed it has a JST & RC plug, presumably rc-car setup.

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/products_id/16550

To keepwith standard rc plugs,my plan was to ditch the JST plug & re-solder a standard RC plug/harness.Ideally right on the board contacts vs mucking with the plug or splicing. Is that what you did? Reason I ask: I’ve also done mods on ESC controller caps, harnesses etc. That was occasionally a painful experience because they apparently dip the dry assembled board in some industrial process -it’s easy to cook things trying to unsolder the highmelting point stuff.

>>

In this 2SLIPO > SWITCH > LOSI-REG > RX configuration, I’m assuming you can charge the lipo through the spare switch lead just like normal nimh?

>>

Similar question on the lipo, many 750mah type SS comes witheither JST or bare wires. I assume you just resolder a standard rc harness/plug?

>>

What about the switch? I use those smaller size JR mini? (next size down from the big monster). Ive measured 8v off a fresh 2S lipo & now the 6.0v reg is downstream of the switch. Is elevated lipo voltage a problem with switch rating or is that more a function of current?

>>

I think the Losi will end up somewhere in proximity to the Rx. Is there any minimum spacingissues? (Im thinking JR 2.4 antennas, or does the losi get warm etc?)

ive been running the losi with a common sence rc 2 cell 800. ive had no problems and ive tried a few connectors just to see about voltage i started out with deans and i didnt need that secure of a connection. so you can really use what ever connector you want it doesent seem to have an effect on anything.

as for the switch im using the same JR one your reffering to and again no problem with that lipo set up.   but one thing i havent tried is charging through  the switch harnes i normally plug it in direct to charge it    i also unplug it after each day im done flying just because i have had them drain when their left for a long period of time and to be safe i just unplugged it.

and no theres no problem running the losi that close to your reciever in several set ups of mine there right next to each other and no problems, it really doesent get that hot it barely even gets warm. also im using the JR/spektrum set up and i only run the 7000s in my q-500 and q-40s nothing less so i cant speak for the smaller RXs.

The Losi regulator comes with the correct battery connector plugs, not a JST connector...you don't need to solder anything.  I have never seen a Losi regulator with a JST connector?    The only thing you need to solder is the battery itself.  Take a JR extension (whatever brand radio you use) and lap solder the black lead to the black battery lead, and red to red. done.  If you don't trust your soldering ability, send it to me. I solder for a living, all it will cost you is the shipping.

Plug the regualtor directly into the RX.  And plug the battery into the switch like you normally would any other battery.  Now when you use your volt meter through your charge lead of the swithc, you'll get the actual battery voltage (8.4v), and not the regulated voltage through the regulator. Again, plug the regulator directly into the RX, and the on side of the switch into the other side of the regulator.

Use nothing but the JRPA001 JR deluxe switch, do not use the little black swith in your racers.  Setup the way I said above, and you'll have 8.4v going right into the switch, there is no issue with doing that.

There is no need to unplug anything while your plane is on the wall, if you rig it like I said above.  When the switch is off, everything is off. You can charge your battery through the charge lead on the switch, just like you normally do.. Just don't forget that you have a Lipo in there, and not some Nicad or Nimh.

hope that's clear enough, enjoy.

Thanks Randy.I think thesource of confusion on my partisI have those Losi's coming in the mail soactually havent seen them in real life yet. See att - theysay JST in the specs, butseemseverybody's hasregular plugs (even their pic looks like regular plugs). Ifiguredmaybethey changed them, or different PNs. Must be a typo.

Re switch rec:Thats the big one w/ gold contacts etc right? Is thiscoming from the perspective of elevated lipo voltage or just protect your butt racing enviornment, vibration, wear &tear etc? Iran those for a while but figured it was overkill &saw so manysmaller ones in use. Probably purge time, Icaught one buggy one already.

While we're at it, do you similarly lipo-fy the Nimh glow driver box withsame Losi reg?

Re soldering:thanks for the nice offer.Had Iknown thatfact about your abilities before Kiev last year, Iwould havesent you a special little project to free up somevaluable motor real estate in these sknny F5D fuses. Behold... the FrankenCC controller with modded capacitors & flipflop motor wiring. IDONT solder for a living,so Ihad to rely ontrial, error &extensiveprofanity.Version-1 didnt work out as good, visualize a block of charcoal

We met in PHX Q40 couple years ago.Good luck at the F3DWC's &say hi to Travis &Gary.

The Jr Deluxe switch is just a great switch.  I use it because it’s more robust than the little switch, it stands up to the environment of pylon racing.  I used it before Lipo’s.

As far as glow driver box.  I use the RCATS glow driver. It comes with a Lipo battery.  In FAI I use the Radio South “orange box” glow driver, I use Nimh packs in those.  However I suppose you could put a Lipo with regulator in those.

I most certainly remember meeting you in Phx!  We will try hard in Germany, hope to get back up on the podium once again.

Randy
