Default My F5D sized for Q40 project

Hi everyone.

From a time ago, I´ve wondered how a F5D airplane woud perform size adjusted for Q40.....at the end part of the fun in this hobby for some of us is testing new ideas and well from there some good things might be learned.

Of course this plane would never be approved as a Q40 model but I decided to design and build an F5D type plane sized to fit a Q40 engine and I just wanted to share with everyone....

This is my own design fuselage with a Polecat wing and a regular Q500 V-tail and landing gear...also it will be having a clear bubble canopy for trying to help with the looks and the fuselaje vertical area.

I haven´t finished it yet as you all can see, but once I do and fly it (Hopefully) I will share the experience .....It might also be a good option for training without risking the real Q40´s and a cheap way to use wings left from other disfortunate Q40´s

Kind regards.

Hey Victor, that looks real neat. If the fuse is 3" wide, 5 " tall with the canopy and gives you a cross-sectional area of 12.5 square inches, that would be legal in Q40 sport. This is exactly the kind of "thinking outside the box" that we are looking for. Good luck and I hope it flies well.

The problem is that it is not based off an aircraft that raced at reno which is required for Q40 approval.. Don't get me wrong though, I think it's pretty neat and would be a great engine test bed I bet.. Can't wait to hear how it flies..

Lee, you are correct on the rules as they stands for 422. In the AMA rules proposals, Q40 SPORT , (event425) ,doesnt require the aircraft to resemble any other racers or “prior approval of designs”, as long as the overall dimensions of the airframe fit the square inch requirements. This opens the door to alot of airplanes designs that have never been built and allows people to be creative and even make bi-planes.

oddy, I admire the experimentation! Good luck with the project.

On another note, I would sure like to see them keep the requirement for airplanes that at least look like a full sized plane in Q40 sport. The old QM15 rules called for a recognizable replica of a plane that has race, has attempted speed records, or was designed to race ( some really neat planes were designed to race, but for whatever reason never actually competed in full sized racing). We used to see quite a variety of planes in the QM15 days, but they all at least looked like planes that would carry people.

Thanks everyone for your comments, preciate all of them very much.

This plane does meet the 3" wide, 5 " tall with the canopy and cross-sectional area of 12.5 square inches rule, unfortunately we dont have Q40 Sport Category in México.

Regarding the real plane looks, and trying to find a look a like plane able to carry people, probably once the plane is finished with its bubble canopy mounted, it might have some slight similarity to the following planes (of course without being powered by a propulsion engine)....
