RE: ViperDog Build Thread
I used an existing gear from an earlier model.
Holes for the tap were drilled first.
The tap was used next.
A large drill bit was used to countersink the bolt heads.

I washed the exterior of the fiberglass parts to remove any last traces of release wax.
The surface was dried.
Lightweight Spackle was squeegeed over the surface to fill pinholes on the surface.

Very carefully sand the surface smooth.
Stop standing before you go through the Spackle. This prevents opening new pinholes.
Blow off the dust with an air gun.

I sprayed white KlassKote primer to the surface of the model.
About 2 ounces of part A and 2 ounces of part B were mixed.
Allow to set about 1/2 hour.
I added about 4 ounces of reducer to the mix.
This was applied with a spray gun.

You then lightly wet sand with 320 grit wet-and-dry sandpaper.
The goal is to be smooth without going through the primer.
I later found how important an even white finish, from the primer, is required.
Yellow does not cover very well. Make sure the white primer evenly covers, or spray a coat of white paint prior to applying yellow.

About 5 ounces of Acrylic Enamel car paint was mixed per the directions. About 1 part of reducer was added to 2 parts of paint.
This was applied with an inexpensive detail gun, from Harbor Freight.

What's black, white, and yellow all over?
One hint, It's not a newspaper.
I used a few stickers and pinstripes to add a little personality.
The automotive clear coat goes on next.

Automotive clear coat was applied.
I used a relatively low pressure setting (20 psig) along with a thinned clear coat.
Approximately 4 to 5 ounces of clear coat was mixed. I added about 1.5 ounces of reducer to this mix.
Apply a light coat first. Wait a few minutes and then apply more coats to cover.

Hi Scott: How do you suspend/support your wing and fuselage for painting/drying to allow full paint coverage but avoid marks? I'm currently painting a Venom. (yellow/black) See ya in Hillsdale. Thanks.

RE: ViperDog Build Thread
I used to try to support the wing with a coat hanger through the wing hold down bolts. This can be done to prevent marks on the bottom of the wing.
More recently I just support the wing between two boxes. I then touch up or rub out any marks on the bottom of the wing. The marks are small compared to the days marks from hanger rash and racing.

Scott, How much weight does the paint add to the model??? both the yellow and clearcoat.
Does the wet sanding and buffing of the clear reduce the weight of the clear coat???

RE: ViperDog Build Thread
Concerning weights, the following are the approximate contributions of each category:
1) Sandable primer (most sanded off) - 1 to 2 ounces
2) Acrylic Enamel paint - typically <1 ounce. This time the yellow paint did not cover well and about twice the normal amount of paint was added. Next time I will try applying a dust coat of white first before the yellow.
3) Clear Coat - depends on how much you spray on - from 1 ounce to around 2 ounces

RE: ViperDog Build Thread
I wet sanded the model with 2000 grit wet-and-dry sandpaper.
This was followed with a light rubbing compound.
Meguiar's Cleaner Wax was applied last.
