Default Sheeting some wings for myself and others

I've had some requests for sheeted S8064 (Viper) wings and I'm going to do some for myself as well. I'm going to do some 66-012 wings while I'm at it. I have the MH17 as well. I have materials for quite a few wings and I'm just going to make wings on request. No payments until the wings are ready. Let me know if you are interested or have any questions.

Default RE: Sheeting some wings for myself and others

I sheeted a couple of wings for Dan Kane Jr this past week and the S8064 wing came out pretty nice. I did the 66-012 last night.

The S8064 has 1/16" contest balsa, .007 x 1" x 48" carbon fiber laminate spars on top and bottom, 1/64" plywood at the trailing edge, and has .7 ounce cloth fully inside on the whole skins. I used one pump of WEST 105/206 on each skin to put the cloth on. Then part of one pump to put the spars and the plywood in.

The weight after a rough trim is 9.4 ounces. The wing is very strong.

I like making sheeted wings. It feels good to be making them again. I was told that one of my wings held the National 426 long course record for several months until Gino DelPonte broke it at Winterfest. Hearing that was cool.

I am going to make a new video or videos on how I make the carbon fiber leading edges and do the 36" spruce spars on the 66-012 wings since my Quickie wings video have been popular on [link=https://www.youtube.com/user/DonStegall/videos]Don Stegall's Channel[/link] on YouTube. I'm also going to consolidate everything I know about making wings on a web site at www.FoamWing.com in the future.

Now I have it in full work mode. But I can switch back to photo mode in 2-4 hours when needed. I use 2.5' x 6' folding tables and I have a 20' x 5' array of them. I am very lucky to have such a large workspace. I think it lets me get a lot done. I think I'm also a bit cluttered because I can spread out. Or maybe I'm just a bit cluttered.

The 66-012 is set up for a chord length of 9.875". It will work between 9.75" and 10" if needed with only a slight deviation. You shape the trailing edge. And the leading edge.

The "Standard" wing has 1/16" contest balsa, .007 x 1" x 48" carbon fiber laminate spars on top and bottom, 1/64" plywood at the trailing edge, and has .7 ounce cloth fully inside on the skins and is $70.

The "Super" wing adds 1/8" x 1/4" x 36" spruce spars top and bottom in a T under the CF laminate and has a carbon fiber leading edge formed by placing wetted CF tow against the core and between the skins. It is $90.

Shipping in the US for 1 to 2 sheeted wings is $15 to $20. Newer rates by FedEx and UPS make shipping of more than 2 sheeted wings more expensive. I've got to double check on 3. I know that 4 or 5 is real expensive.

The original Bird of Prey was not. I'm not sure about the later one. I kind of thought it was.

He can get a PDF from [link]http://www.rcpro.org/net/uploads/attachments/t803_m5_n1.pdf[/link], print it and see.

I don't think the Bird of Prey wing is 66-012

Dave,

The Original was the Revolution wing. Then Fred cut a 66-012 wing for Lyle. The wing that is sold with the kit today is the 66-012.

Dan,

You are correct. The Bird of Prey wing I have is definitely 66-012 with a cord of 9.75 in.

Ok, the wings I have that Ihave that are 66-012 don't seem to fit the Bird of Prey fuse that i have. Maybe slightly different chord or scale or something.

I'm going to make a video of how I make the carbon fiber leading edges at least by this coming weekend.

I will continue making videos on a variety of topics. If you like the videos, I recommend that you sign up for a YouTube account and subscribe to my channel. I plan to make at least one video a week for quite a while.

Comments and questions are welcome.

I agree Dan,

I found myself in North Carolina yesterday and gave Don a call. He graciously invited my wife and I to come by and see his operation. It is top notch all the way, he showed me how he cuts a wing core on his feather cut machine and it came out perfect. He also showed me other wings in various stages of completion. The end product is fantastic, and his super wing is extra strong and looks great. I am sure anyone would be proud to have one.

I have spoken with Don several time over the phone and we have emailed back and forth, but it was really great to meet his wife and son and Don in person.

Thanks Jim. It was very nice to meet you and your wife. I'm looking forward to racing with you in Tuscaloosa and in Waco at the [link=http://www.Club40Nats.com]Club 40 National Championship Race[/link].

I enjoyed having another visitor to the shop even though I'm still getting things re-arranged. I had a lot of Sky Raiders and LA Racers in the way, so I missed showing you some things that you might have found interesting.

After some hiccups getting the wing operation back up to speed, we are in near full production mode now.

I'm only one wing from being fully caught up and I will start making Super 66-012 wings to have on hand for immediate shipping as they are the most popular. I will also have S8064 (Viper) wings that use the balsa leading edge on hand soon, too.

Here are 2 Super and 4 Standard plus CF leading edge ready to go out the door.

Thanks Bob. I appreciate repeat customers. Especially after my hiatus.

We're cutting cores galore for people that are sheeting their own.

I have the 66-012, S8064, and MH17.

With shipping, in the US, 1 core is $25, 2 cores are $38, and 3 cores are $50.

The view count for one of my sheeting Quickie Core videos on YouTube is over 10,000. That's kind of cool. I have video shot of how I do the carbon fiber leading edge, but I haven't had time to edit the video and post it. I'll try to get to it. If anyone is interested in seeing it, PM or email me to motivate me.

I put a video together from some footage I took last year of sheeting a Super wing with a carbon fiber leading edge.

Hi Don,

What air foil would I need for a 424 viper plug and play? Thanks, I would like two wings made, what ever you suggest. Thanks,

Ed,

The S8064 is the airfoil on the Viper 500 and I have templates for it. Don't know if you are still interested, but we are cutting cores and making wings.

I made a video about cutting 47.75" Quickie 500 wing cores using the FeatherCut system and published it on YouTube Sunday night.

It is at [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS5IS9iHyl4[/link]

I'm sheeting Quickie wings and I have a special offer for the beginning of this year. I'm going to do 10-12 wings at a price of $60 each plus $15 for shipping for 1-3 wings. Since it is building season I will get them done ASAP.

I sheet my wings with 1/16" contest balsa with 0.6 ounce cloth fully on the top and bottom. I have a technique using a roller where I only have to use less than an ounce of epoxy on each side. You can see it in my videos at http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...ckie+wing&sm=3

I put 1/64" plywood on the trailing edge. I also use 1.4 ounce cloth in a 2.5" strip on the trailing edge. I use 1" wide 0.007" carbon fiber laminate as the spars.

Even at the $60 price I will do the "Super" wing. The wing that Super T R/C was using at one point. It has 1/8" x 1/4" x 36" spruce spars. They do add .5 to .75 ounces to the weight. Super wings are generally around 11.7 to 11.9 ounces. The Standard wing with no carbon fiber leading edge is typically 9 ounces and the wing with the carbon fiber leading edge is typically around 10.5 to 11 ounces.

I have 66-012, the S8064 (Viper 500), and the MH17. I only do Super wings in the 66-012. I can do carbon fiber leading edge on the S8064, but I don't like to as it has sharper curves at the LE, especially on top. Unless you are flying 428, I recommend the Standard wing with or without the carbon fiber leading edge as they are plenty strong, even for 428.

Happy New Year,

Don Stegall
