Default RE: N.Tx.Pylon Racing Org's 2nd Q-25 & EF-1 Pylon Race for 2012

BUMP

This upcoming Sunday, May 20th is the second race in the North Texas Pylon Racing Series. We will race both Q-25 and EF-1.

Q-25 pilots should have their airplanes marked with their NTx-PRO racing number per the rules, but NMPRA red-green stickers are available and MAY be used depending on the preference of the pylon judges. EF-1 pilots will use standard NMPRA red-green stickers (ULINE 5"x7" inventory stickers)

This will be a Two (2) Pylon Course, 400 feet between Pylons.
We will be alternating rounds between Q-25 & EF-1. i.e. one round of Q-25 and then one round of EF-1, etc to let the EF-1 guys have time to recharge batteries.

I am considering having 4 regular rounds of Q-25 followed by A-B-C finals, with the ability for the winner of the lower round to move up. That was fun last time and made for some great racing.

Registration will be at 10 AM, 1st race will be at 11 AM.

Event Fee is $15 for the first event. Lunch will be available for $5. The second event entered will be $10, so for one event including lunch, $20, for 2 events including lunch $30.

Fort Worth Thunderbird R/C Club is hosting event.
Location will be at the T'Birds New Field, Mustang Park, Lake Benbrook, 3602 Winscott Plover Road, Fort Worth, Tx. 76126.
GPS: 32 deg 36 min 35.12 sec N, & 97 deg 29 min 06.31 sec W.

Entry to the park is off of FM 1187. You show your AMA card to the gate attendant and ask for a "Thunderbird Pass". That will get you in the gate for free. Drive to the end of the park road and turn left. You should see a sign for the field. I will attempt to have the pylons up as early as practical for practice. Many of the regular racers are attending an SPA event in Tulsa and may not be racing, so this is your chance to really show your stuff.

Default RE: N.Tx.Pylon Racing Org's 2nd Q-25 & EF-1 Pylon Race for 2012

We had an excellent day for the 2nd race in the North Texas Q-25 pylon series. This was the first race at the NEW FW Thunderbird field and only the third competition held at the new field. After having been in the same location on the West side of Lake Benbrook since 1964, the Corps of Engineers required us to move. Many tens of thousands of dollars had been spent by the club to make our old field as good as it was and it looked like we were going to have to start all over again. Thanks to the intervention of Congresswoman Kay Granger, the Corps replaced the facilities that were lost. Due to the tireless efforts of T-bird member Joe Jopling and with financial contributions from Lockheed/Martin, the new FW Thunderbird field is one of the premier club flying sites in the country. THANKS to all those to helped make our new field the masterpiece that it is. Next March, we will host the SAE-Lockheed/Martin Heavy Lift competition which brings in student teams from all over the world to compete. But now to the race itself.

The wind started out switching around from the ENE to the ESE but by race time it had steadied out from the SSE at about 10-12 mph. The afternoon high temperature was in the high 80's. Pretty warm, but not as bad as we have sometimes. The new portable pylons worked quite well and are recommended to any club that need new pylons. We initially had 10 entries show up for Q-25 but only one entry for EF-1 so we didn't have an EF-1 race. The low turnout is most likely due to some of the regular Q-25-er's having attended a 2-day SPA pattern contest in Tulsa the same day and the EF-1 guys having flown only the weekend before at the Waco C-40/EF-1 race. We had 2 new racers come out, Simon Thayil and Donnie Osinski, as well as a couple of guys attending only their 2nd race. Pylon judges were provided by the Hawk Field Fliers and Golden Triangle RC Clubs and they did a FANTASTIC job. As a change from our earlier procedures and with the concurrence of the pylon judges, we switched to the NMPRA, hi-low/red-green sticker system for identification and it worked well, mostly. More on that later.

We flew 2 rounds before lunch, enjoyed a large plate of BBQ Brisket, potato salad, baked beans, etc., and got ready for the remaining rounds. Nathan Haycock, showed up during lunch and since we had an empty spot in the 12 man matrix, we popped him in for the final two rounds. There was excellent flying all around, and after 4 rounds the contest was complete. The results are:

Gary James 15
Jerry Stafford 14
Larry Mowatt 14 1 cut
Simon Thayil 10
Steve Blackwell 10 3 cuts (tie)
Bob McDuff 10 3 cuts (tie)
R.A Hubbard 9
Verne Bell 8 (tie)
Bernie Olson 8 (tie)
Nathan Haycock 7 (2 rounds)
Donnie Osinski 3

Our system does not have the capability of recording times, and we didn't have enough judges to man stopwatches.

After the end of the official race and just for fun, we re-juggled the matrix for a Copper-Bronze-Silver-Gold "Main Event" where the winner of the lower round is allowed to move up to the next higher round. Nathan managed win the Copper, Bronze, and Silver and made it to the Gold race. We had one mid-air during the Silver race, where Nathan clipped the tail of Steve Blackwell with the prop at pylon 2 and Steve went in. That was the only lost airplane during the day although there were some close calls. The Gold race saw some very tight racing, as you would expect from the 4 pilots who had flown the best during the heats. At the finish line the results were;

GOLD
1st Gary James
2nd Larry Mowatt
3rd Jerry Stafford
4th Nathan Haycock

SILVER
1st Nathan Haycock
2nd Bob McDuff
3rd Simon Thayil
4th Steve Blackwell (midair)

BRONZE
1st Nathan Haycock
2nd Verne Bell
3rd Bernie Olson
4th R.A. Hubbard (DNF)

COPPER
1st Nathan Haycock
2nd Donnie Osinski

As mentioned the Uline red-green stickers worked well for the regular race, where the matrix software puts a pilot in a particular lane and he stays there for the duration. BUT, when we chose to have a main event, there was a lot of switching around between lanes. We staged pilots in a lane corresponding to the sticker that they already had to the extent possible, but in some cases, as a pilot moved up the ladder they had to change sticker locations several times. Fortunately, the stickers peel off easily, IF they are warmed slightly with a heat gun.

We had a great time, and are looking forward to our next race which will be on June 3rd and will be held at Gary Pannell's place.
