Hey Don...not sure if my PM went through? I still have one of your first (IIRC it's called Smasher?) Q500 fuselages that needs a wing...
I've been out of the hobby for a while, but ready now to get that thing together...and I would like to buy one of your "new year specials" for it. Please PM me and we can work out the details...thanks. Tom

Thanks guys. Please send me a PM or email with your current email to [email protected]
I've about reached my limit for this run and the special price. I have a lot to do. Thanks again.
I hope to make the spring race at Old Julian Airport.

Hi Don,
Sorry, I just got back around to RC Universe, I did not hear back, didn't keep up. Almost forgot about my request. I would like two viper wings built. Do you glass the center section on the wings? Let me know the current cost and how and where you would like payment. Thanks,
Ed Alves

Thanks for the inquiry. I am extending my $60 per wing offer through tomorrow. I got a big response to the New Year Special with over 20 wings ordered. I got ramped up and deliveries are now happening. I do have a 3-4 week lead time at the moment. I was only going to do 10-12 wings, but people seem to really like the $60 price point and I didn't want to serve some and not others. Quite a few to repeat customers which is gratifying.
I recommended using a balsa leading edge on the S8064 instead of the carbon fiber leading edge.
On my 66-012 wings, I reduced the size of the leading edge by 1/16" (by extending the core) for a smaller CF LE and it saved weight. Standard wings with the CF LE are coming it at under 10.6 ounces. With balsa, they will be closer to 9 ounces.

There is one option that costs a little more that I can't do in the $60 special. Some people want CF laminate on the trailing edge instead of the 1/64" plywood. I use two 1.25"x.007" strips top and bottom overlapping the core by 5/8" to 3/4". The price for that option is $10 per wing. It does make the trailing edge stiffer. I am probably going to go to .005 laminate on CF trailing edges. Mainly because both sides of the CF .005" laminate are textured for better bonding.

Don,
have you ever done additional glass in the TE? I do my foam cores with a 2" wide and a 1.5" wide strip of 2oz cloth down the TE on each wood core (4 layers per core total) and don't have to add any ply or carbon for a really stiff TE. When I sand the wing, I can take it right down to the fiberglass for a sharp trailing edge. I do the carbon tow in the LE also, and tape the wing sheeting together (like a book binder) with the LE sheeting pre-sanded (to wrap around the LE) and a 2" wide strip of 2oz fiberglass to bridge the leading edge sheeting. This way the LE is solid, and nothing has to be done after the wing is bagged to finish the basic wing core.
Just another option to think about,

Please make a video and put it on YouTube. People are very interested in Quickie wing techniques as you can see from https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...ie%20wing&sm=3 ... as one of my Quickie wing videos is around 18,000 views. I recommend that you monetize your video and pick up a few hobby dollars from it. My Cutting foam cores for model airplanes is over 72,000 views. I highly regret not monetizing that video earlier.
Your techniques sound very interesting. I can't do that technique on $60 to $70 wings though. My wings have 0.6 ounce cloth entirely under the skins with a 2.5" piece of 1.4 ounce cloth on the trailing edge. With the 1/64" plywood they are plenty strong and you can sand the plywood down to a point. I could go without the plywood, but the plywood is ding resistant.
I did 0.007" x 1.25" x 48" carbon fiber laminate strips on the trailing edge of a couple of wings. The first one was heavy at 11.8 ounce compared to some done a few days earlier at

Well, I might when I get back to building some foam core wings. Right now I am knee deep in pulling molds for my 426 & Q40 designs. I do have pictures of the process at http://sempra.org/phpBB3/viewforum.p...8b9a6e206c140e on building my foam v-tails, main wings and fuselage kits.

Got the CST supplies. The .005 is not that much lighter. Only 10-15%. A 0.007" x 1.25" x 48" strip weighs 11 grams. A 0.005" x 1.25" x 48" strip weighs 9 grams. This is probably because of the way it is textured on the backside. It has teflon peel-ply on the back. Of course I took it off to weigh it. The .007" actually measures about .0075", and the .005" measures .0055" to .006". The 5 is a little more delicate.
I just have to be careful with the glue on the CF strips and the CF leading edge.

It's almost building season.
I just shipped out some more wings on Sunday. I have two in the bag and I'm caught up now. I sold a bunch at $60 but I can't do that anymore as material prices have risen and I have gone to using .005" carbon fiber on the trailing edge on both sides so the trailing edge is real stiff. All use a 1" x 48" strip of .005 CF laminate at ~3.5" back from the LE area.
NACA 66-012
Standard Wing CF TE - $80 - balsa leading edge
CF LE TE Wing - $100 - carbon fiber leading edge
Super Wing - $120 - with 1/8" x 1/4" x 36" spruce spars under the CF laminate (.007") (not needed at all unless you are racing 428)
S8064 - same as Viper 500 airfoil
Standard Wing - $80 - balsa leading edge
MH17
Standard Wing - $80 - balsa leading edge
I'm only going to commit to a max of 2 wings per week. I let them cure under vacuum for 72+ hours and even though I can do 2 at a time, I don't like to. And I have to start getting some building time in on my own stuff.
If you have any questions about how I make my wings, see https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...V89DIwvxpG1fr9
Please check out StegallHobbies.com on your phone, tablet, and desktop browser. It is based on AngularJS by Google and Twitter Bootstrap. It should resize for your devices and possibly change when you rotate them. It does not work on IE8 or IE7 and I don't have a warning yet. But I plan to use this technology on a number of the websites and would like to hear back, good or bad.

Wings are coming out really nice these days. These two came in at 10.5 and 10.9 ounces without the leading edge being shaped down. The .005" x 1.5" x 48" carbon fiber laminate is making for real nice trailing edges. And some issues I was having with the CF leading edges are taken care of now. They weren't bad before
This is from a customer that got two earlier and is getting these.

Here are a couple of photos of how my skins look before going in the shucks.
I used to put 1.4 ounce cloth on the trailing edge, but some people wanted carbon fiber laminate trailing edges. They came out real well after I changed my technique. Now I roll on the epoxy and then the 0.6 (or 0.7) ounce cloth full width on the skin. I use a 1" wide strip of CF laminate for the spar and on the trailing edge, I use a piece of 1.5" wide CF laminate on the trailing edge. This is actually easier than the cloth and 1/64" plywood I was using, but it costs more. The TE CF alone is over $5 per wing. But people really liked it and since it is easier I will only do plywood trailing edges on request now. Any for in-stock I make will be CF LE and TE. That's what most people are getting.
I get up real early. Yesterday I got up, worked on the RCPRO software, made a wing, and then masked off a wall in our dining room. My wife wanted an accent wall, and in "Radish", it is an accent for sure. Had to put two coats on it, and I was worn out so I made a wing this morning instead of last night. I'm working from home today, so I have until 8:30-8:45 to get another coat on the wall.
I can now make 2-4 wings a week. The layups are easier with new techniques I am using besides the CF TE in terms of how I prep the wings to go in the bag.
Happy Holidays Everyone.

I had not made many wings since 2009 and it took me a while to get back in gear and get back to where the wings come out good and it's not a chore. I was late shipping out wings, and some people didn't have them for this past racing season. That $60 New Years special got a ton of business, but I just can't make them for that anymore.

This is the dining room wall. It came out pretty nice. The low tack Frog tape I used on the walls worked better than the blue tape I used on the baseboard and the crown molding. I have some touch ups to do before it is finalized. Now I know how to mask those better. The 24" protective plastic curtain made it easy to keep from getting paint on the surrounding areas. I'm sure the wife is going to have me painting more stuff now as she is very pleased that she finally got her accent wall.
I'll post final pictures of the wall and your wings so we can see if my carbon fiber wall is going to be strong enough.

Sent you a PayPal invoice with the "Christmas" price for 2 wings with CF TE and CF LE. And a Private Message. Let me know if you don't get one or the other.
I have one order of 3 ahead of you. Waiting on some wood that should be here Friday.

Next time I'm in CO I'll do some painting for you.
How about a couple of pretty light, straight, and strong wings? Didn't get them shipped Friday. Going out on Monday. Left them under vacuum until Thursday since I did one on Monday morning. A balsa leading edge will add less than half an ounce on these.

I currently have one order for 3 wings. I have to get more wood because some that I got wasn't usable on Quickie wings. National Balsa says they can get some out next week.
After going to Old Julian Airport last week and with the Club 40 NATS being run during the AMA Pylon NATS, I need to get some stuff for myself put together, maintained and some new building. So I'm only going to commit to 2 wings per week.
I hope your wings work out well. The carbon fiber trailing edge has been popular. Wear a mask while sanding it. Carbon fiber dust is very bad for your lungs. Let me know how you like the trailing edges. You should be able to get them down to 0.010" to 0.015".
