New Wood Q-500 kits almost ready
Hi Guys,
Well I am almost ready to go here, about a month away. The Vector 500 (low wing , conventional tail) and the Pacemaker (high wing V-tail). They will be very complete kits with laser cut tab lock fuselages, preslotted foam cores, carbon fiber for the spar, gear , wheels, hardware, and even the nylon bolts included. I am hoping to keep them in the $65 range. I am hoping to have them ready by mid October.

I have a Dominator 500 that I race informally at our field. How will the Pacemaker differ from the Dominator and will it be noticeably faster?

RE: New Wood Q-500 kits almost ready
Hello,
Saying what is better is really in the pilots eyes. I like to think both of my designs fly as well as any top design out there, and I worked very hard to make sure the design is as easy to build as possible. Although I am an electrical engineer by education(also 2 years of aerospace from GA Tech), I have been a manufacturing engineer in machine design and process development for the last 13 years. I am hoping I was able to put that experience to good use when laying out the planes. I like to think they both have some creative building solutions. The real goal here was to be able to get a very competitive design in the hands of guys out there that want to race, but are not in a position to buy a composite. I have, as well as other people, raced both designs in 424 and 428 and have won a lot of races with them.
The instructions will be extremely clear, the plans will be some of the best you will ever see thanks to Bob Brassell.

Vtail crutch
Hey Dave,
Are you on here? Maybe now you can see what I meant by a crutch to line up the Vtail. The bottom of the fuselage is set at ZERO DEGREES so when the vtail sits in the crutch , it is also set at ZERO : ) The edge of the crutch that the V-tail sits in has a V channel. Nice and simple. The bottom of the fuselage is your building board. The crutch will also be laser cut/tab lock to the bottom of the fuselage so it can not be misaligned.

Hi Lewis,
I like your high wing design, however I have yet to build a V-tail. Difficult? Faster and turn as well as conventional? Also, where can I get a pair of wheels like the ones shown on your Vector 500?
Thanks

RE: New Wood Q-500 kits almost ready
Hello,
I can safely say that thes planes can easily be built by someone with NO Q-500 building experience. I was given one of the samples given out gave out a to see how guys would make out, and the planes came out great. They also used my input to clarify a few things in the instructions. As far as those wheels go they look like ones from Dave Shadel or Darrol Caddy. There are several good sources for pylon hardware out there. Maybe someone could list them all for you. If you go to www.pylonworld.com I think there is a list there.

Hi David,
You sure did point out a few things I overlooked. There will be few more going out to guys in the near future for the same feedback. As to the wheels in the picture, I am fairly sure they are from Dave Shadel at Performance Specialties.
I like to think these planes are very builder friendly, and the laser cutting really helps keeps everything lined up. You do need a computer radio to fly a V-tail

I've found that you can use the GWS V-tail mixer that they sell for $12 to $15 to accomplish the V-tail mixing. It actually works quite well. I've been meaning to write up a little article about it. The cool thing is that dual rates still work as expected.
Other companies sell the mixer under their own label, but in general I believe that any of the little V-tail or wing/delta servo mixers will work.
I happened onto this solution because I was trying to find a way to reduce newcomer objections to V-tails.

Lewis,
It is the [link=http://www.gws.com.tw/english/product/aux%20circuit/vtail2.htm]V-TAIL MIXER-II[/link] and the part numbers at Tower are at [link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=gws+v-tail&FVPROFIL=++[/link].
Where it says to plug in the aileron output, just plug in the rudder output. Use servo reversing to get the proper operation.
The Futaba version will work with all common servo brands whereas the JR version will not accept Futaba J plugs.

Lewis,
The kits look great, I would be interested in one or two when they're ready. You can never have too many quickie kits around for that one bad weekend

Hi Lee,
I will keep you on the list and let you know as soon as they are ready.
Dan,
As far as Bowie goes, Rich Berner and I were planning on it, but right now with work, looks like I am going to be stuck here. We have new equipment coming in on Friday, and I have to be there to over see the installation and calibration.
If we don't make this we are going to try for the Oct race. As far as David goes, email him at [email protected] Not sure if he will come or not. His dad passed away a couple of weeks back and I know he still has a lot of things to go over.

Hi Lewis,
When is your next race? Also where is the NEPRO website. We are finally all done getting settled in here with the move from Iowa and I thought I might try to make a race. If nothing else just to watch. I see you have the Vectors all ready to go. How close are they to the ones we were scratch building for the club racing in Iowa?

What's the chance of getting a low wing version with the foam wing already skinned? I've never sheeted the foam stuff and don't have a strong enough vacumn.
