Default Radio equiptment

I just bought a GP Viper 500 from Tower Hobbies scratch & dent($48). I'am not planning on racing for a while so i'll be using a 46fx. I am wondering about radio equiptment on q-500 planes. I know that standard servos will be fine for sport flying, but i would like to know what is used for racicing.

Go to how do you set up your wing thread and that will give you some ideals.

Depends on your budget.

Low end

Standard servos

Mid end

Hitec 225 nylon gear servos
Expert SL 451 servos

High end

Jr 3421 Digis
Futaba 9650 Digis
JR 3121 Coreless

Thanks Daven that helps alot. I was planning on using Hitech 225mg, but i've been reading some posts about problems with the metal gear. Which reciever is best? I was thinking about the Hitec Electron 6 for it's light weight and compact size, but i'm more familar and comfortable with Futaba gear. I also have a HhydraMax NiMh 4.8v, 650Mha, AAA battery pack, it is lithgweihgt, 1.94oz. is this a good choice or is there something better.

Hitecs 225's work fine on a budget. I would stick with Nylon over MG.

The Electron 6 also works well, I have several of them that I use for 424 racing.

428/422 is a bit more demanding, personally I think the high end electronics are necessary there.

I did a little test with my plane I'm putting together tonight. I tested the servos with the Hitec Super-Slim 8 receiver then the Futaba 127DF. I found when moving the gimbals around I got faster, stronger, smoother action out of the servos with the Futaba receiver. Not a lot but just enough that you could hear the difference in the servos. It is my opinion that the Futaba Dual Conversion electronics are a tad better than the Hitecs. I would probably say just one step higher.

I thought the servos were a little smoother as well. I compared the servos in the wing for ailerons. I tested the Hitec HS-300 and the Futaba standard 148. I liked the smooth sound and movement from the Futaba better.

If you wanted to take the next step you would prolly want JR equipment. But be ready to pay for it.

Definitely true.

In addition, when I ask for someone’s opinion on something I’m always hoping for an unbiased opinion based on their findings of experimentation and not brand loyalty.

Here's an opinion...

Stick with the same brand receiver as your transmitter...
Take Dave's advice on servo's...

Question on Receivers: Hitec Electron 6 or Futaba R168DF?

The Hitec weighs 0.4 oz less, but Futaba may b e higher quality?

I have had very good luck with the Hitec 555 and Electron 6 at all of our local races.

Ocassionally when I travel I get intermittent interference and have started using higher quality stuff.

Its a tough call, the hitec stuff is lighter, but not perfect.

I have had good luck with both, but if I'm planning on spending some money traveling to a race, I tend to stick with the higher dollar stuff.

Dave you hit the nail on the head.

If given the choice between the two I would grab the Futaba every time. They just tend to be a little higher quality than the Hitec stuff.

However, the drawback to the Futaba is their large clunky size. I own about (5) Electron 6 receivers and the reason I have them is for size constraints. If the Futaba won't fit, I use the Hitecs. Mainly parkflyer type stuff anyway.

So given the speed of the parkflyers, a small glitch here or there is no problem.

Sorry, I just wouldn't be comfortable with a Hitec in a Quickie......

I love JR, it's great watching a 100 dollar futaba knock down a JR setup on the same channel by accident.

The guy with the futaba kept on flying, of course this is just one story.

Won't that happen to just about any brand?

I suppose, just that the fub, kept on going, never noticed a thing and the other brand went down, results will vary, that I understand

My goal in stating the story to begin with is to show the potenial for anything and anybrand can go haywire.

I myself own all 555 and electron 6 for my 428 & 422 , never seen or felt an issue.

That did happen at our field. One guy was up on channel 56 with his futaba radio/reciever and another guy fired up his JR radio/receiver on channel 56 also. Immediately on takeoff the JR combo lost control and a beautiful custom built Seeker with Composite wing was destroyed. It was cool when it went through the power lines though.

The futaba guy did have his throttle shut off, but otherwise maintained control and deadsticked the plane.

I love the Futaba 149dp, but it is big, and it is expensive.

Futaba 9650 digitals on elevator and aileron.

Hitec 85 or Futaba 3102 on throttle
