Hello!
Does the Great Planes Viper hold up for a Nelson engine and is it competitive (the Viper that is).
I have Viper in our Q-500 class (We race 6,5cc sport engines, with 10x6 plastic props and 80/20 FAI fuel) and it is a very good flier and it behaves very well in the air.
Most prefered engine over here is the Webra .40 GT, as it turns a 10x6 RAM or Graupner Cam prop at 14000-15000rpm on 80/20 fuel. Speed is around 180km/h for the fastet airplanes.

Yes it will take it with some ifs. If the factory did a good job fiber glassing the wing center section so the glass is actually stuck to the wood, then the wing will take it. If you strengthen the firewall, wing mounts and fuse in front of the stab then the fuse will take it. It will be fast enough for a good set of thumbs to make it competetive.

I flew my Predator with a old Webra quickie 40 and Ultrathrust muffler, 9/7apc and 15%nitro and I'm inclined to think it was hitting between 210 and 230 kph. It was turning the 9/7 around 18000 on the ground.

I helped my partner this past weekend with a Nelson and a Viper. Yes it will work OK, add CA glue to every joint you can see that looks dry.

I glue the fuel hatch and add more glue behind the firewall for added strengh and use a skinny Jett tank installed thur the wing opening.


As far as being competitve, I 've heard of one going 1:07 or 09 when composites are doing 1:03 & 4's

Last I heard from the Texas group, was that they are about 2 seconds of the best composities.

With the advantage that they give the ARFs around here, I'm tempted.

I like to build, so I'll continue to run my own plane, for now.
