RE: i need speed
An all composite Q40 racing airplane such as the Dago Red plus a Nelson Q40 racing engine will cost close to $1,000.00. Is this truly what you are looking for?

Here's my first Dago, got it used in 2003 at the Nats for 350, just loved it to pieces..
the one pictured is also used from a dude out west, lots of the big guns are going to polecats with the argument of "do ya' wanna do a 1:01 or just be happy with a 1:04?"
So I beleive this one helped to fund a 1:01. it cost me 500 bucks.
I put my 10 dollar nelson in it, yup 10 bucks, that's how much I spent on a raffle and WON it, right Daven??
The dago takes off with a fair amount of rudder to counter the engine spin and grooves wonderfully, lands as expected, very controllable
First plane I had where you just flew it on eleavator, roll stayed where you put it

I think there were either 2 or 3 Dago's that got broke up that day.. Splatt's was the worst by far.. I broke mine in half but it's repairable.. It was still fun though.

RE: i need speed
thank you daven i will look at that plane but i really want one that will exceed 140.
ed smith, i was looking last night on cali. speed pros. i must say they have some nice looking stuff. i think the only problem i will run into is not knowing to much about the shimming and changing the timeing and all that on the nelson Q40. if i could get someone to break the moter in for me that would be the best soulution for me. what kind of life are you getting out of the nelson. My father is an a&p mechanic working on helicopters, he tells me that a piston engine turning those rpm's (30'000) would not get a lot of life.
I dont have anybody here that comes to our club that is into speed as i want to get into it. i want to go as fast as i can. but need some help doing it. i have been in the hobbie for 10 years but i have never wanted to go this fast. i have flown biplanes, fun fly's, trainer's, sport aerobatics, and i have a 1/5 scale p-51 with a brillille 46cc and a 84.5 in wing span.
i am also wanting to get into jets (eventually) but i was told i needed to fly some prop planes that would increase to over 125 mph sustained i was thinking of the patriot XL from tower hobbies. i know where i can get a webra speed .91. but i don't think it will cure my need for speed. i might not want to spend $1,000 on just the plane and engine so if you have any sujestions i would app. it very much.

In what part of Texas is your club? There is a Q40 race in Wichita Falls, TX this weekend...nothing but the type of planes that will exceed 170 MPH will be there.

My 10 dollar engine works well without the fuss of thinking about shims and what not, it was set up properly by PS
Yes, If I want to stay up with the top dogs on any given day, there may be a need to change to the local conditions, but for the most part I just run it and enjoy the speed.
Nelsons are a good engine to start with, if you can tune a 2 stroke, than you can run one of these. I wounldn't worry about the top dogs yet...

RE: i need speed
see the thing about it is there is no one here that does race so, the only way i would be able to race is if i travel, or get somepeople involed in it here. but in that lies my problem i am getting ready to move to orlando. i dont know if anyone there is into but i will find out.but like super splatter says i have to start somewhere.
maybe if i get good enough i will travel and go to some events. i am wanting to start going to events anyway, because of my top flight giant scale p-51. which i might add is coming along pretty good. very slow going right now because of the move and all but once we move i have a lot of sanding sanding to do.and more sanding.

RE: i need speed
160 + mph will scare most locals away from racing.
Start with a cheap arf (Q500) in the 120 mph range and you got a shot.
If you show up with a Q40 going 180, and costing $1000, you will have a tough time getting people interested.
Dave Shadel sets up his Q40 Nelsons around 194 and 14 and they run well under most conditions. The numbers themselves don't mean as much as how the engine performs. I've had my best luck around 196 and 16, they are easy to tune, and can stay on the lead lap. In any case, it will be faster than just about anything you have ever seen.
I'll be in Witchita falls this weekend, looking for some good racing against the best in Texas, can't wait!
Also looking for the great food, I love going to Texas.

RE: i need speed
When I visited my corporate headquarters in Dallas I went to Texas Land & Cattle. Had home-brewed Shiner Bock and beacon wrapped filets!
Don't ask how I remember this. Must have made an impression......

RE: i need speed
Shiners bock alone will make me happy
Our trip to Houston last year gave us some of the best chili, brisquit, Mexican, and BBQ that I have ever had.
If Houston sponsors another race, I can pretty much gaurantee a few coming down from Minnesota.

I wish I could remember the name of that Mexican place we ate at in Houston?? That is still the best Mexican food I've had to date.. I'm bummed since I won't be at the race in Witchita Falls this weekend.. Oh well, that just gives me more time to get ready for Phoenix I guess.
