New Nelson owner - notch alignment question
Hi, I'm a new Nelson .40 (Q500) owner and have a question for you guys.
How should the notch on the propeller backplate be aligned?
I've seen some posts in this forum referring to aligning the notch in the "Spinner" and I'm not sure if they are referring to the same thing.
Thanks!
Kevin

RE: New Nelson owner - notch alignment question
If I did not know the answer I would be thoroughly confused by the answers given. In simple terms. The notch should be aligned to the centre of the intake window in the crankshaft.
The easy way to do this is as follows. It does not matter in what position the engine is mounted. with the prop/spinner in place on the engine, bump the piston against compression. At this point align the notch half way between what would be half way between the horizontal and vertical lines of the engine. Sort of aligned with the needle.

RE: New Nelson owner - notch alignment question
1. Remove the glow plug
2. Rotate the crank until piston "locks" @ Top Dead Center (TDC) Check by looking through the glow plug hole - you should see the piston at its highest point.
3. Align the notch with the center of the venturi/carburetor throat hole.
4. DO NOT ROTATE THE CRANK and install the prop at the 9:00 - 3:00 clock position.
5. Re-install the plug.
6. Fly fast, clean, and DON'T CUT!

RE: New Nelson owner - notch alignment question
My first Nelson has a notch on the crankcase (between 10 and 11 O'Clock) to align the notch in the spinner back plate to.
My second Nelson has the spinner notch, but no crankcase notch. I have not run it yet, but was going to set it to the 10~11 O'Clock position to see what happened.
I set my first prop at the 9 -3 O'Clock position with the piston at TDC. My prop did not stop at this position when the engine stopped. It stopped where it ran up against some compression, which was about 7 - 1 O'clock - which was not good for the tips of that $30 prop.
