I have recently had the weekend of Sept 6/7, 2003 open up on my personal schedule. I had been looking for an appropriate weekend to host a race in the Champaign IL area this year and I would like to get an idea of the interest in this. The format would be CAPS Standard and/or 424 on Sat & Sun, AMA428 on Sat., AMA422 on Sun. Similar to the CAPS Classic held each year in Muncie. The proposed site would actually be in Rantoul at Chanute AFB (closed) about 11 N of Champaign. Any interest please respond to this forum or directly to me. Thanks!

Pete,
That sounds good, and you would probably get a couple to come down from Minnesota. The only thing that might hamper the attendance is that Rockford is having there big race September 13-14.
People may not want to travel consecutive weekends.

Events Offered.
The events will be:
Sat - AMA428 Q500 Open Racing (Commonly referred to as Expert)(Nelson Q500 engine is the most popular) and CAPS (Can Am Pylon Racing Society) Standard class racing, which is Q500 with a limitation on the engines to those that have a controllable carb (Jett Sport Quickie engine is the most popular).
Sun - CAPS Standard class racing and AMA422 which is Q40 racing, currently the fastest class flown
If there is enough interest we will have AMA 424 racing which is novice Q500 generally using a specific list of approved sport engines.
Hope this helps! We'd love to see you there!

For all practical purposes, I'm a beginner at pylon. Would it be in bad form to enter 428, 424 and CAPS. I have Racer II's and a Jett CAPS engine and a TT pro. I'm thinking the more airtime I can get the better but would others flying in 428 rather I not fly with my slower plane and less developed racing skills.

Hopefully, I'll have gotten several races under my belt long before this particular event.

No one is ever going to fault you for getting more flight time and practice. In reality, it is very difficult to campaign two different classes in the same day. Depending on the turnout we may also need to mix 424 and CAPS in the same matrix to make it interesting for everyone. I would suggest that you choose one class, concentrate your efforts there, and you will be well rewarded.

424 and CAPS are typically run together, unless Pete has an overwhelming turnout for 424, I suspect he will run the 424 class together with the CAPS ( Standard class) Reason being, history has shown there has not been enough in 424 to have there own matrix. If there is than I suspect he will have a separate matrix
Truth be said, if you already have a Jett motor (CAPS) than you will most likely not look back once you fly it for the first time. You should hopefully have a few races under your belt by the time Pete's race rolls around in September. We can practice in Muncie in April if you need some help.
Don't forget to put Terry Frazers race on your calendar for 5/2-5/3
somebody may have to verify that? We can all drive up together, he puts on a great race, great turnout as this is the first race of the season

Okay, If CAPS and 424 are ran together, that still leaves 428 open. I realize my Jett won't keep up with the Nelsons but would it be a problem to run with them. I realize it might be a bit hectic trying to run both classes on the same day but if the plane and engine is legal for both classes, why not?

BoBo,
There is a whole circuit of 424 racing in Illinois and Wisconsin.. I believe there is maybe 10 races a year with a overall champion crowned at the end of the year.. Rockford Illinois and St. Charles Illinois have races during the summer.. I forget which town the races are in in Wisconsin... Your in Broadhead your maybe 45 minutes from me and my father in South Beloit Illinois.. Hopefully we can meet ya this year at some races.. And Pete me and my dad will be down for the race in champaign.. That's a wonderful place for a race down there..

The circuit Wayne speaks of also includes races in Brillion, WI and Grafton, WI. Check out www.q500424 for the details!
Also would like to know if our TTPro .40 Quickies will be strong enough to compete with the rest in Champaign on Sept 7. If so, I've got a group of at least 4 that will be there to compete!

With all these positive comments I would be a fool not to have a race. Let me get the field locked down and then I will put together a flyer. Thanks to everyone for the support!

Mr. daven--
Do you have a schedule posted somewhere on the web? Our pocket of racers is over here in the Green Bay/Milwaukee corridor but you never know when a convenient weekend may come up to do some "business" over in your area.
To see our dates, check out www.q500424.com

Go to..
www.ncplracing.org for a complete list of our races this summer, including our season opener this weekend. I would recommend the "big one" in late july as good one to come for. we had 25 contestants for that last year.
