Default Q500 races, KC area August 5th

Our club (the RC Barnstormers) will be hosting a Q500 race on August 5th at our Hillsdale Lake flying site. We run 424 with TTpro .40's, APC 9/6 props, 428, and our "A" class, or the old Rossi .40 and/or MVVS Q500 .40's. I'm not sure about the rules these days, but it used to be the APC 9/7 C2 prop on the A class engines.

Registration at 9, try to start flying at 10.

Contact Carl Melin via e-mail at [email protected], or myself at [email protected] and I'll try to get Carl's flyer to spread around.

This will be our first Q500 in a few years, we used to run a couple of races per season, but it's been slow lately. Hopefully we can get a good turnout and get folk's blood pumping again! A few of us have been going to Nebraska (Mead) a few times per summer to fly with the Mead guys, some of them should be coming down to fly with us at Hillsdale.

Hope to see you there!

here's the text from Carl's info about the race. It's got some directions to the field, thought if anyone was interested, it might help:

Q-500 RACE
August 5, 2007

For 424, 428 and Rossi/MVVS Classes
Hillsdale Flying Field of the R/C Barnstormers

Registration at 9:00am
Racing to Begin at 10:00am
Fuel will be provided. Registration is $15.00 to recover the cost of Fuel and Awards and a Kansas Daily Park Pass.
We have lights and cages and cut monitors for #1 Pylon, but not 2&3. We expect to get in 5 rounds in all classes. The course is East West, regardless of wind! The Runways are all grass, mowed short and 100 feet wide by 600 long. Bring a canopy because we can’t use the shelter as it is too close to the course.

Directions: From 169 Highway going south from Olathe, take the Hillsdale Exit(255th St.) and go west 4.7 miles. The field is directly south of the dam for Hillsdale Lake. At the west end of the dam turn south, then the next right (also south) and then the next left(East)

If you want to get on Google Earth and look, try these:

38 deg, 38' 41.78" N, 94 deg, 54' 28.16" W

By the way, the google earth directions for "to here" from wherever aren't the best for getting to our field - try Carl's directions instead..

Looking forward to this one.

I'll be there will the venerable Bird of Prey for 428, the one Etken molested in Amery last year. Also plan to break out the vintage 1992 Nelson. She's well seasoned but still pretty salty.

Hope to have a GREAT turn out insupport of Carl and the Barnstomers.

Great - it'll be good to have you guys show up. We need to show our club how much fun it is to have a race, so they'll keep doing it! It would be great to get back to the sorts of turnout we had back in the early 90's with the old MOKRA racing.

Looking forward to seeing you all! E-mail if you've got any questions, I'll get 'em answered.

Since you asked...

The Hillsdale race is in the books. ~13 die hard competitors braved the blistering August temps and high winds for 5 rounds of Q-500 action in 3 classes. 424, 428, and MVVS Q500 were flown. 9 registered for 424, 3 in MVVS, and 6 in 428 after Duane Huland fell victim in practice. Though in true sportsman fashion, he stayed on as the starter all day.

Robert Williams Sr. and Jr. had a rough day but hopefully have it out of there system. Just remember, race experience can't be substituted, even when the day goes poorly. Learn from it and use it next time.

It was good to meet Eddie from Branson finally. Sorry it took all day to figure that out, can I blame it on the heat? Glad you made it up.

Danny Williams battled a leaky needle valve assembly early on. Once he got that figured out, he flew VERY well.

Dave and Rick came down from Omaha. Thanks for making the trip guys, Rick took home top honors in MVVS class. Good flying.

The Chop flew well in 424 and took home the wally. He teamed up with his father for the day, hopefully we'll get the "Master" to put together to a plane come race with us in October.

Causey flew well and had 2 or 3 really tight races with "Clean Sweep", Mike Tallman. Causey ended up taking 2nd place in 428 followed closely by Mike.

I had a good day with a 1992 Nelson that seemed to really like the hot air. It ran well on the battle weary and fix heavy Bird of Prey. I think the additional weight helped in the gusty conditions.

Thank-you to Carl Melin and the Barnstormers for putting this event together.

NEXT KC RACE:

Saturday October 6th.
KCRC
424 only
Short Course

Should be a blast...

AJ, thanks for coming to the race, I think we all had a good time.

The 424 race in KC sounds like a fun one, I plan on making it barring any trips for work, etc. At this point I'm not aware of any, but you never know.

Hope we can get some more of the Barnstormers to make your race, I think the 424 only format should be good for bringing out those that are tempted to try, but might be a little leery of the really fast planes at this point.

Thanks to all of you that made it to our race, we hope to do it again next year!

It's true the Williams had a pretty rough day. I'm still suffering from the loss of the Voo. Racing will never be the same. On a brighter note, the Williams skunk works department is hard at work. Parts began arriving today and more are on the way. We're down but not out.

Seriously, we had a great time in spite of our troubles. The difficulties only make us want to work harder. Thanks to Carl for a great race. I look forward to seeing everyone at the KCRC race in early October. We'll be ready with some new equipment.

Maybe I'll have the Voo II.
