Default What type of cover are you using

Hi
What type of covering are most common used over there?
Mono-cote or Ora-cover
I have tried booth, and I prefer the Ora-cover. Shrink a little more and easier to get good results. But a little harder to cut, need very sharp blades all the time.
What are your opinions?

Default ultra-cote is ora-cover

Look at the backing of Ultra-cote, it says Ora-cover. And yes that stuff is the bomb. Makes for some nice looking models. Easy to use and yes I go through bunchs of blades covering.

I like the Ultracoat much better, but don't like the color selection nearly as well.

There colors are mostly pastels.

Plus they don't have a good Dark Green.

Like Daven says...

I am just getting back into the hobby after 10 years and I have only used monokote, thought I would give ultracote a try and and my colors all picked out in my mind then when I went looking I found that ultracote does not come in a dark green that I had in mind.
Oh well, I really want to try the ultra so I guess I will have to come up with something different color wise.

John, what was it that made you feel you did a better job with the Monokote? Just curious since I know what I can do with that, but not sure about how things will turn out with the Ultracote

Default Covering MC/UC

Actually, MonoCote is slightly lighter in wt. than UltraCote. (I found it hard to believe too!)
Many flyers prefer the luster/shine you get w/ MonoCote. I think the Ultra looks a little more realistic, and it somewhat easier to apply, i.e. works at lower temps.
It really boils down to personal preference. They are both good,,,just different.

9G I just found it more difficult to handel after the backing is removed. Yes it does go's around corners better but I,ve not had a problem doing so with monocoat. I suppose I,am just old and set in my ways.

If you try to put ultracoat on with the high temps needed for monocoat, you won't like using it.

I use just barely enough heat to get the ultracote to stick with. I only use the iron, no heat gun. I start with a big piece and start ironing in the center, and work my way out. I can do a complete Q500 wing (top and bottom)in 2 hours.

If you are getting any bubbles using ultracoat, its because your heat is too high. Cool down the iron, and work slowly and the results should be perfect.

I had no trouble using it dave and the results look good but found in my case it just takes longer and the additional effort it takes in handeling after the backing is removed is not worth the advantage of going around corners a bit better. I suppose I am still a 'hard case'.

No problem John.

I did at least 10 planes with Monokote, before I switched. I can't see ever going back.

Default Ultracote

Dave,

My pet peeve with MonoKote is those spanwise wrinkles that appear whenever you set the airplane in the sun (i.e., when you go to fly it) ... especially on the ailerons. Is Ultracote any better in this department?

The span wise wrinkles will go away if you put the ultracote down at a low heat. If you get it too hot, or don't let the air escape as you are ironing down, you may get a bubble that will be tough to get rid of without lifting up the covering.

On planes I have gotten it perfect out of the shoot, the covering doesn't do much of anything in the sun. Not nearly the sagging, bubbling or wrinkling.
