The best way to start is how it arrives from Shadel. You may need to slightly adjust the head clearence, ect, for specific conditions on any given day, but there's not a "best set up" that works everywhere.

Hi!
When I got my LS Q-500 engine from Dave Shadel I had to remove one of the head shims to have it run good.We use just 10% nitro over here in Sweden so it seems logical.
15% nitro use 2 shims.

Quickie or Q40 motor??
For the quickie I've not been using a sleeve shim, and running the head between .010 - .015
For the Q40 motor I use a .003 under the sleeve and run the head between .015 - .020
It really varies from motor to motor, just keep playing with it untill you find something that works.

I guess there has to be a starting point. The figures I got from Performance Specialties are as follows.
Deck height 0.193"
Head clearance 0.018"
However as Gary and Dave have stated, local conditions and fuel used may necessitate some adjustments.
