Default Nelson Q500 .40SS Performance

Guys, just picked up a Nelson Q500 .40 SS for some testing on a new 428 design. Seeing how its my first Nelson I need some info.

What size tank is needed. I've been running the Tettra 4 oz but was wondering if I need to go to the 5.5 or 6 oz.

I've heard that the 8.8 x 8.75 or 8.8 x 9.0 APC props are good. What RPM should I expect to get on these props with 15% fuel?

Any suggestion on shimming the sleeve/head?

Thanks,

Bob Harris

Bob, a 5.5 or 6oz tank should get you roughly a 2 1/2 to 3 min flight.

What shims are on the sleeve and head now? A setting of .193/15 should be a good starting point,,, you should see something over 19K on the pinch, then launching about 6-700rpms down from peak should also be a good starting point with the 8.8x8.75. and its ok to be rich when first trying to figure out the engine. From there on the next few runs you'll get an idea for tweeking on the needle.

Another thing to watch will be coil movement on the glow plug when compared to a new one,,, if its getting sucked out, you need more compression and visa versa,,, when the coil movement is neither getting sucked out or pushed in and if its not deformed, thats about as good as its gonna get,,, if its deformed then you went to far on the needle setting. Leave the sleeve shims alone for a while till you think you got the engine figured out after a bunch of runs and then experiment some more.

Just don t launch at peak rpms or you'll be left with nice paper weight for the bench.

hope that helps,,,

Most guys that race, use the 5 1/4oz tank.

From start up to empty that is about 2 1/2 minutes, which is perfect for racing.

Stick with the 8.8" x 8.75, best all around prop for that motor. My good ones would peak around 19,600 and I'd launch around 19,200-19,300.

I ran mine at .191 and .011 for the sleeve/head spacing. Great motors.

Thanks for the info guys.............Bobby and l are doing this project together and l'm going to
be doing the engines. Johnny McDermott and Katz have been helping but there is a lot more to these engines
than the Rossis l ran 20 years ago................Once again ,thanks so much for the info.

The SS motors are far friendlier and easier to set than the LS. Just start on the rich side, and work up to a perfect needle setting.

One thing these motors don't like, is getting hot on the ground. Try to get the needle set quickly, and once your there, pull the throttle back to about 3/4 untill your ready to launch, this will cause it to go a little rich (and cool) till your ready to go. Slowly open the barrel back up and let it clean out before you pusher lets go.

If you keep it on the rich side, you will have no problems, it will last a long time.

I haven't gotten a good chance to talk to him or my wife about it just yet. When one is gone all week it isn't good form to pester the woman who put up with two kids alone about going on a little airplane boondogle. Timing my man...it's the only way I've stayed married for 22 years.

Well if you must asked the wing came out great! Not bad for a $20.00 setup. Getting ready to bag my 424 wing tomorrow so you will have a plane to follow behind next month!!!!

BTW Daven says the Nelson is 16 to 17oz dressed out. The Thunder Tiger is almost 18oz. Looks like we may need to add some weight!!
