RE: build thread on Scat cat
Even with an OS .25fx on it, seemed plenty fast to me. Never was as fast as my doddger, but I really liked how it flew.
It didn't survive open combat day up here a while back. That was a pretty crazy day, lots of old quickies mostly with OS .46's on them towing streamers. A good friend had a nelson .40 on one, but the streamer only lasted about 30 seconds before the speed would rip it off. There was some spectacular mid-airs that day, but after the midair where the motor came off and nearly knocked out 5 pilots like bowling pins, we called it a day and the event was never run again (probably a good idea, but it was fun).
Just keep plugging at it, she'll be done in no time. I saw another Scat Cat for sale in the RCU forums for $85, not the $29 they use to sell for

RE: build thread on Scat cat
I just lost my scat cat a couple of weeks ago. Asked it to snap at a little too much speed & folded the wings. Where did you get your kit? I have not been able to find another one. If built light it is a great flyer with rudder and the profile canopy. I used a 225 servo on the rudder and standard on the elev. Both mounted behind the wing with a hatch for access and nyrod for connection. CG worked out OK with a piped 36 Webra and no fuse mods. With rudder all you need is a small tail skid for ground handling. Speed is good and the turns are square without a lot of speed scrub off. A pylon racing prop really set mine off.
If anybody knows of a kit, please let me know.
Thanks

RE: build thread on Scat cat
I built this in 1984...last flight was this Spring. Original box is shown. Still grooves, but has the typical Scat Cat "Hunt", especially if it's windy! The veterans might remember the "Hot" engine back in the day was a CoMo .40 - this one was reworked by George Parks in Austin. Note the carb barrel is opened up a bit, requiring crankcase pressure to feed the fuel. The carb functions like a current Nelson or Jett in that it won't idle much below 10K RPM. Max RPM from it on 15% Powermaster is 17K - 18K w/APC 9X6 Sport Prop. I'm guessing a stock TT Pro 40 with an APC 9X6 will hold it's own against it.
Anyway, thanks for the memories!

RE: build thread on Scat cat
quick question.. I'm getting ready to install the wing. I'm using two dowel rods for the front, but for the back is 2 10/32 plastic bolts going to be strong enough, or should I go to 1/4"?
thanks again.. jb

The # 10s are plenty strong enough. They are in general use in 428. 10/24s are preferred however because of the coarser thread especially if you are threading into wood.

RE: build thread on Scat cat
the motor mount in the pic is from fourmost products and is still available, the original design would only fit a K&B sport .40, still a cool efficient design FWIW

I have one of those Como engines. they were Supertiger's really. I also remember those mounts. Don't think it would be legal though.
Maybe contact Lonestar balsa for Scat cat kits. Riley Wooten designed this beast, and he was still selling kits before his fire. He might still make them now that he is up and running again.
These planes are cool from a nostalgic point of view but are very slow compared to a Viper or other modern Q-500.
I recommend putting as much of the radio behind the wing mainly to get it out of the way of the aileron linkages. It seemed they were always getting in each others way.
