Hi Guys,


I was wondering what kind of helmet do you guys wear when racing? Theres got to be some various assorted types and styles out there from the standard - Hard Hat , Batting Helmet to Hockey Helmet or bicycle helmet. Are there any standards set up by any NMPRA, NEPRO, OSHA or the alike making recomendations? I have used the Traditional Hard Hat and Batting helmets.

What do you use and whats the best?


Lets see your style and why you think its a good helmet to use.




PS: I am in the market for 2 new Team style matching helmets. LOL

A good place to go is Dick's Sporting Goods, they have some skateboarding helmets that are comfortable to wear.

Seriously though, keep the helmet info coming. I think that the use of a good helmet is a must.

Hi Guys,


I did a little research at Dicks Sporting goods online. There is a large variety of helmet catagories to choose from. Baseball, Football, Lacrosse, Hockey, Bicycle, Skate boarding, Rollerbladeing, and then your Motorcycle helmet and the good old American Hard Hat.

Which makes the most sense? Who knows, maybe the helmet you feel covers the old noodle the best or maybe its just the one that matches the color scheme of the latest Racer. All kidding aside, I think the number one reason for a good helmet is not so much for the possibitly of an accident during a race, because I think the odds of that are pretty high. What I do see the greatest potential use for the helemet is for the newbie racer or the excited, adreneline charged pilot who just won a heat as he walks out to pick up his bird and a deadstick bird comes in for a landing. This is the time when the race is over and your guard maybe down as you hurry to retrieve your plane and the silent plane is coming in for a landing that an accident could occur.

I am leaning towards the Basball style helmet because it has a visor and covers down pretty low over the back of the neck. I just need to find one that fits, beccause they lie when they say "One size Fits All". LOL........

The biggest problem I see with guys and helmets is them falling off. When I went to some races in 2002 and the 2002 NATS, I saw Randy Bridge, Travis Flynn, and others wearing skateboarding helmets. Then at the NATS I saw Jim Allen wearing a cap under his. So that's what I wear.

Straps to keep it in place, and a visor to block out the sun.

You will see the standard "construction" hard hat at most local races, and it was what I used for many years. The skateboarding helmets are what you will see at the bigger races, and what I switched to a couple years ago. I find the skateboarding helmets more comfortable, and less likely to fall off when leaning over a screaming nelson. I have had the construction helmets fall off leaning over, which is no good.

You will see all kinds, the cowboy hat is popular, as well as many of the US flags, eagles, etc...

Jim Allen has been wearing a different hat the past couple years. It looks like a ball cap, similar to the hats at this link. Looks like a neat route to go. To be honest, I don't think any of the hard hats we use would really do much good, but they do protect the head when trying to walk under some of those low ez-up shades.

I would question whether those soft bump caps are legal for use.

From the AMA Pylon Racing Rules:

4.2.1. Every person going onto the racecourse or between the designated sideline and the racecourse (see racecourse diagram), and all officials, whether on or off the course, shall properly wear a helmet approved by OSHA, DOT, ANSI, SNELL, NOCSAE or other recognized organization that certifies safety equipment.

From the link on the softbump caps you posted:

This bump cap is NOT a safety helmet and does NOT meet OSHA or ANSI requirements for head protection.

DO NOT USE as a sport safety helmet. DO NOT USE when ANSI compliant head protection is required or needed.

If you buy a skateboard helmet make sure it is CPSC certified. Most of them are not. I bought one made by S-ONE last year at Sports Authority and it was around $30. It's comfortable and fairly cool even in the 100+ degree days we have during the racing season.

The link I posted is similar to what Jim wears, I have no idea which exact one it is, or weather it is certified. I would bet a lot of the construction type helmets being used are not certified either. Not sure if that has ever been policed.

I found a similar soft sided hat/helmet with the following spec:

* Meets CE bump cap standard EN 812/AI

According to the current rule, would this be legal? According to the way I read the rule, I would allow.

Hey Guys,

Here is a picture of mine. My son Races and he calls for me and Vice Versa. He wears a Baseball Helmet which I like, and I am just trying to find one, but I would like to try on in the store first. So far none of them fit (Yea sure - "One Size Fits All). Anyway you can see how handsome the Blinding, Yellow Hard Hat makes me look. LOL...... Back to mail order Helmets.

Thanks for the leads on the Safety websites. Racing Safety equipment is a topic I don't see to many questions or discussions about. If anyone knows of any other Safety equipment for Q-500 or (any type of Air racing for that matter) please share these Safety orientated equipment websites, like safety glasses, Hard Hats etc. with us.

Still Searching for a Hard Head OOooopps, I mean Hard Hat........ LOL......
