Nelson SS-Q500 wanted
Sorry for the ‘ad’ but I thought Id get better exposure here. I’d like to buy some Nelson shortstroke Q500 engines. I need the last SS version before the Q500-LS became dominantin 428(the SS-Q500 is our prescribed Canadian Q500 engine with different muffler). So if you have any newish /real nice shape collecting dust, you’d like to unload, please email me directly with asking price, condition, track record - example: shortly after gentle breakin this engine went on to win the US Nats in 2007... I think the LOL was at the example of "track record"..
Good luck in your search. My two Nelsons are SS, but they're both old enough that they are probably not the version just before the LS came out. Neither has the counterbalance prop drive, etc. I'll admit I didn't keep up on the differences, I quit racing for a while and lost track of what was what.

No it was the example that I liked. Unfortunately, they were already running mostly LS motors in 2007
You missed some good deals I unloaded about 6 SS motors over the last two years between $225 and $150, including a top 5 nats motor
I don't own a single SS motor right now, and I hear they can be converted to LS versions, still not sure how that is done, but thats another thread.

Yeah, I’m not sure either. Presumably the SS case would necessitate different sleeve, rod, maybe even relieved piston skirt to make a LSQ40 equivalent. Sounds like $$. Life would be easier with more LS cases, hope that gets sorted out. Ive got a SSQ40 that’s probably Q-convertible but that requires Q500 piston/sleeve plus the Q-carb do-dads vs venturi... Hence the 428-SS request. Thanks guys, maybe something will pop up.

Why LOL? Are youguys reverting / hanging ontoSS amidst the LS 'inventory issues'? I dont fly 428 but heard the difference between LS&SS is comparble to Q40. Please enlighten.

I think the differences as described to you are greatly exaggerated... but were just enough to make the top competitors re-engine....and make eveyone else go "Oh my god... not again".

there is a big differance between the 2. you'll get lapped once or twice with a SS, but I can tell you exactly after this weekend. I'm going to be racing my SS against LS's this weekend. Ican go a couples laps before the LS' s come on

Nice Randy, I was going to add "its not the motor Jess", but thought that would be too mean
Yes, they were $380 for a long time, and bumped up to $410 when the LS arrived.
A good SS quickie motor was low 170s, the new LS's are about 10 mph faster.

On a related note, have any of you successfully taken apart the Nelson muffler? Ihear its high-temp locktite / adhesive on the threads.Do you have to take it up to a certain temp?If so, what are we talking -torch?, BBQ on BROILsettingetc? The idea being maybe I could remove the baffle from a SS-428 or Q40 pipe &I'd have the dumbed down Cdn Q500 version.

Daven ... 170 ... sounds fun ... my Viper with the Rossi 53 is pulling about 110 mph only and that feels slow. I would be happy wiht 150 for sure. Now to go get a new Viper for fun flying and look for a proper Q500 for some extra fun. Just that I fly of a dirt field with tons of pebbles and any nice composite Q500 will not last long.

hand launch it, I've done it dozens of times.... land it softly with the power off. Problem solved. Unless you are flying by yourself?

When we race we just launch off a 4 by 8 sheet of plywood. Here's a couple vid's of us racing OS 46 to get an idea. A nelson would fly out of your hands, and we always land dead stick. So you do not need much to do quickies, just space to land
