I have gotten by with Rustoleum primer followed by their color. Wash the gear with acetone first, and maybe sand it lightly. It has held up ok.

I have used Sherwin-Williams Dual etch on bare aluminum items. It removes the oxydation, shines it and makes ready for paint. You must be ready to shoot paint within 20 minutes of beginning. Use something flexible too.

Surface prep is important too, but easy.

If there isn't any gunk on it, all you need to do is to clean it with a mild detergent and water using a ScotchBrite (or other nylon) pad, until you achieve what's known as a "Water-break free" surface.

What that means is this... wet the surface, does the water "break" into little puddles and channels? Then it's dirty.

What you want it to have the water coat the surface like a smooth sheet and stay that way for at least a few seconds. If it wants to "Break" away from a certain area all the time, reclean that area.

(And wear gloves, or hold it with a rag, your fingers are LOADED with oil!)

Then prime and paint.

DITTO to Mike's comments.

The Scoth Brite will give the surface enough bite for the primer to stick to as long as the surface is CLEAN
