I used Sherwin Williams Automotive clear coat over Nelson water based paint. i think it's name is acme 1 paint. It works very well.

I use Krylon clear over water based paint and water slide decals. Works well. It is not really fuel proof but the planes I used it on were electric.

It depends on what fuel you are using.
if nitro.. I have had great success with Top Flight clear matte finish.
if gas, I have used rustoleum and valspar. But my favorite for past 4 years is Minwax poly but only the gold colored label not the silver one.

Its a gas plane, I am using rust-olium paint with water base art airbrushed on top. So the rust-olium clear would be best. Main thing is that it doesn't react with the water base paint. The top flite paint has a bar reaction with rust-o paint.
