A bit off topic, But a True story.
Last year I sold a Garmin 376C on eBay. The Guy in Calif seemed nice enough and was in a hurry to get it..
He paid Immediately with PayPal. II mailed it USPS Priority. So he would have it for the weekend, I even left work to mail it.
3 weeks later I get a Message on eBay, "Where is the Unit"?.Followed by a PayPal request for a refund. I had left the funds in the account just in case this happened. You never know. This little unit has XM Data Receive, for several functions. So I Immediately OK's the refund, and Enclosed a Note that ID get in touch with XM and Report it stolen. . They told me that it had been reactivated by "GUESS WHO". I told them to go ahead and have the County Mounty address this issue. The next morning this guy is on the phone from the County Jail wanting Me to know that he had paid me back and With a Small donation to my pay pal, Could I Id call off the Law. I just let him work it out with the law. Somehow he had his Boss involved, He wanted it shipped to his work address...

sorry to hear of the trouble but this guy is running scared i dont like people who know they not telling every thing to paypal thats kid sh-t you should send this fourm to paypal so they got it all as for the missing plane when and if you dont find it get the insurents and take the lost as a lesson well learned i loss a boat on garyhound maybe the loader knew what it was and put it in his truck ,i hate people who steel[:@] anyway i knew a guy who use to ship g=h and told them they were the remains of dogs or people those always made it there ,lol goodluck and we hope you find it ,rye

Still not one response from the buyer. I made three phone calls to the Tampa Greyhound this morning and finally got through at 1PM. The guy there knows me by my voice now, lol. He was not able to get thru to corporate either and didnt speak to anyone there, he said he would call again this afternoon and let me know what he finds out. It seems Greyhound is not very good with communication even internally. What a way to do business. I just got back home and will start calling Corporate and emailing myself.

Ok, just made a call to Greyhound corperate office. Got a recording again to leave a message so an agent will call me back. I left the same message at the same number yesterday but have yet to hear from anyone from Greyhound. I will send an email to the one and only person I have an email address for at greyhound.

Heres a copy of the email I just sent to Greyhound Corperate. Please follow the results of this thread to help you decide if Greyhound is the company you want to ship RC planes with. I think this thread is a great insight into how Greyhound really works. Here is a copy of the text from my email to them.

Hello, I sent you the information on my missing package yesterday but havent heard anything back via email or telephone. I also called and left a message at 214-849-8620 yesterday and today for an agent to call me back and still no response. Please give me a number where I can speak to a supervisor or a person in a responsible position that I can speak with.
I have been posting the events I am experiencing as I try to resolve this issue to let other people who ship items with Greyhound so they will understand what they can expect from your company and the great service provided. Please forward this link to management so they can follow along.

Finally! Someone from Greyhound actually cared enough to contect me. It was Sonya that I emmailed yesterday and today. She is fast becoming my Greyhound Hero! Heres her response:

Thank you in being so diligent in letting me know your concerns. I have forwarded the information over to my supervisor on yesterday and he has a claims representative working on it. I will contact him and see if there is any additional information that I can obtain and I will be sure to pass it along to you.

WOW, the right person can make all the difference. Amazing Sonya has replied to me again, here is the context of her email:

OK, sent the buyer another email although he hasnt responded to any of the last 4 emails I have sent, here is the text:

Hello buyer, Not sure if you are interested or not but here is the latest status on your package. I sent another email to Greyhound Corporate today since they didn't get back to me yesterday like they said they would.

You did everything correctly. I would not refund any money whatsoever. In a previous life I was into restoring 70's Mopar muscle cars and I would have issues similar to yours. I would always be very clear with the buyer what he was getting for the money and how it was to be shipped and after I shipped the item it was no longer my concern. If he elected not to insure the item it was his loss, if he did pay for insurance and there was an issue he had the insurance paprwork and it was his responsibility to file the claim with the carrier.

As far as PayPal is concerned I have had issues with them and will not use their services again. I would contact PayPal with your documentation and if they still refuse to release your funds then consider the loss a small price to pay to no longer have any transactions with them.

The above is my opinion only formulated after years of dealing with the public and with such companies as you mentioned in your post.

Reminds me of my motor cycle fuel tank fiasco.

I sold a fuel tank on ebay years ago. I had bought it for $400 +$50 shipping. It came in a cardboard box packed in news papers without a scratch to NC from CA.

It sold for $500 + $50 shipping.

First problem. I had to buy a box big enough and some bubble wrap and packing foam. It cost me about $30 for all this stuff because I had to buy every thing retail because I couldn't find a box big enough.

Next the Shipping was $85. I had paid $50 from CA to NC and now it's $85 to go from NC to TN one state over? So total shipping was $115.

Next I packed this thing well. I wrapped the tank in large bubble wrap. I cut and taped small bubble warp shielding around the corners of the tank. I taped cardboard and large bubble wrap around the front of the tank. I placed it in an over sized heavy duty cardboard box filled with foam peanuts. I insured it for $700 and sent it on it's way.

The buyer sent me a email with photo the next week. The tank looked like someone had taken a sledge hammer to it. every corner was smashed in. Even the concave areas of the tank had dents in it. I told the buyer I had UPS insurance and would file a claim.

UPS called him and asked to see the original packaging. He said he had thrown it away. They said "Sorry, case closed, no money".

UPDATE! I feel like I am making progress. I recieved a call this afternoon from the Message I had left. It was Ms Linda brown from Greyhound Corporate. She says her job is a Customer Resolution Service specialist. She had a copy of the scanned tracking document but couldnt read it, I printed another copy of the document much darker. I scanned this and sent it to her. She could read this, after being on hold for 20 minutes, she came back and gave me a file number and a customer number (file # XXXXX and customer number XXXXXX). She says she will assign this to a Claims examiner on Monday morning and ask them to expedite the claim since it has been inactive for so long. She also told me that a claim investigation can not even be started untill 30 days after the shipping date. She also said that it normally can take up to 60 days to resolve it for disposition. She says she will try to get this one expedited. She says she will call me Monday with the status and hopefully it will only take 3 or 4 days. It seems I might be onto something finally with her help.

Man you can't win dealing with these companies. Palpal gives you 30 days to file a claim wile Gray Hound won't even start to look until 30 has past.


ebay non-paying bidder policy

1 give them a week to pay.
2 send them a email telling them they need to pay within a week.
3 Ebay sends them a email telling them to pay with in a week
4 you file for a non-paying bidder credit
5 ebay rejects it because it's been over 5 weeks since you sold the item.

LOL, well I doubt that would happen but thanks for looking out for us. Good news! I did hear from the buyer and I responded back to him. He says he was very busy at work and couldnt respond, I can understand that, it does happen. I do feel bad he felt I slandered him. If I did, that was never my intention. I dont want anyone to know who else is involved in this transaction and if I did anything to make the buyer obvious, I apologize and will glady delete any information associated with that. I am going to keep all correspondence between him and myself just that from this point.

I will post the results and actions of Paypal and Greyhound. I hope the plane arrives very soon to the buyer and still stand behind all my efforts to resolve this. I do feel once the package is packed properly and delivered to the shipper, I have fulfilled my legal obligation. I feel my moral obligation goes farther than that, thus I have expended great effort in getting the plane to the buyer. What efforts should be expected of a buyer in such a situation?

It's been said before but your responsible to get it to the buyers door or bus terminal in this case. You can ask that they pay for insurance but if they don't you still need to buy it to cover your self.

Imagine if you ordered a $1,500 radial engine from Tower Hobbies and they shipped it but it got lost in the mail and they just said "Sorry, we gave it to UPS and it's no longer our reasonability at that point".

as far as what you did ,you are doing right ,dont let the buyer feed you a line of b-s even as busys as i am getting home sometimes 9 or 10 pm i still check my e-mails that a copout on his part he must be reading the fourm and feels like a rat for hiding from you dont feel a moral obligation you were not trying to rip him off a persons actions are his own you remenber he didnt tell paypal every thing [X(] as before i said cut your losses forget that and stick to your guns there are not a lot of people like you who try to do the right thing i thankyou for that ,rye

I have deleted my comments speculating on the intent of the buyer our of respect for him. He has read the thread and I ask that noone comment on him, lets get this onto the steps it takes to resolve this. The buyer has been polite and cordial in all communications, let there be no doubt of that. The statements of " the buyers responsibility" or "the sellers responsibility" will be decided by Paypal. The buyer felt he needed to act to protect himself, I can understand that and would have at some point done the same thing in his situation. I have never not gone above and beyond to help make this transaction complete. I think one of the things I have learned is, theres no shortage of opinions out there, but they are opinions, not rules for doing business. The legal obligation is the minimum, I will continue to go beyond that just because its the right thing to do no matter what the minimum legal obligation is.
This whole thread is intended to be a learning experience for all of us, to help prevent future situations or at least minimize the impacts they have. I am in this hobby because I enjoy it, I enjoy enjoy building, flying and the interaction with others in the hobby, we shouldnt lose focus of those that. Now, back to the issue, to get the plane to the buyer as fast as possible.

Well, I think the lesson we should take away from this is to ALWAYS insist upon insurance for big ticket items. When the guy decides to buy it, just let them know "the total will be XX amount plus X for insurance." Not optional. If they balk, send them the link to this thread.

What I'll never understand is as a seller be it on here, ebay or anywhere else for that matter, WHY NOT JUST ADD THE PRICE OF INSURANCE INTO THE SHIPPING CHARGES TO BEGIN WITH and save everyone the headache instead of "ALWAYS insisting upon it".

I guess thats just to easy.

Greyhound may be cheap but it really does not matter who you ship with. The guys handling your box are not going to handle it like it is supposed to be handled. I use fedex ground and UPS to ship the things I sell. I alway pay for insurance and it seems the big boxes always get punctured, ripped, torn etc. I think sometimes out of spite. You can take a marker and write in BIG bold letters "fragile", Handle with care, top load only etc. It does not matter.

I just shipped an MXS to Alabama and it got thrashed.

I hate shipping. If I can deliver the plane myselfI prefer to do that so it gets to the buyer in one piece.

My 2 cents.

Hope you and the buyerr find the plane.

Well for one if you are competing against other sellers then adding in the cost of insurance, handling, materials and so on, you will lose sells. Insurance is just another cost of the long list of fees that are out to suck up the last of your profits.

Then the buyer can coplain that your shipping charges are too high.

Some people are just skin flints and don't want to pay one dime more than the asking price. They will skip paying $5 insurance on a $1000 item every time. Then demand a refund if the item is broken or lost.

Really the seller buy insurance to protect himself you just try and get the buyer to pay for it.
