If you must have equivalent strength to a sheet without joints you will have to put a doubler or scab accross the joined area. If you have the room, a doubler on each side would be optimum but you can usually get by with it on just the unexposed side.

It wouldn't have to be a dovetail, but something interlocking like a rabbit joint would be good. And, as Rodney suggested, a doubler.

Why not just buy a piece that is 24" long, or whatever.....the balsa wood suppliers like Superior have larger sizes than the usual small 6 x 12 sheets.....?

If you own or have access to a router/router table, a lap joint would be the best way to join two sheets of plywood.

Here is an illustration of a lap joint.

Good Luck!!
