I've never hear of "Solvent" alcohol, but you can certainly use Denatured alcohol to clean your engine.

well the reason I ask is ive got a book by Harry Higley and its called all about ENGINES and it recomends to use (Solvent Alcohol) but im sure its a little dated as the copyright is listed as 1992.

I went to the store one day looking for denatured alcohol, and they only had it that said 90% and the other offering was 70%. Is the higher percentage the same as denatured?

Denatured and rubbing alcohol are different things...

Rubbing alcohol will be available at the drug store or the grocery store..

denatured is usually only at the hardware stores.

I use a lot of alcohol, even sometimes for cleaning. Kidding aside, alcohol isn't very good for cleaning off burnt on Castor oil. I do use it to clean the inside of the engine after a rebuild before assembling. Just make sure to oil up the bearings real good after an alcohol flush.

Some of the alcohol's have alot of water in them, so once you clean the engine, make sure you give it a good oiling. Good Luck, Dave

Good point. Not sure what if any water content is in denatured but the stuff I buy at the drug store is 91% alcohol with 9% water. It evaporates very quickly but there is still water in there. Reason I brought up oiling was i once got the bright idea to clean an engine after a rebuild and leave it dry. No rust but dry bearings do sound like hell a year later. So much for that bright idea. A bit of oil and all was well but!!
