I’m sure this has been mentioned before but why are some sellers adding paypal fees to the total cost of their items for sale? Aren’t those fees added for a service paypal offers for buyer and the seller? Adding this fee is like a web merchant adding 3% for using a credit card. Why not just kick the asking price up a little to cover the expense? What do you guys think?

I agree,, I never add on when I sell,, but that said. In most cases paypal protects the buyer more than the seller,, if you pay with a Money Order to avoid the fees you'll have little recourse if the deal goes south.. I see it as buyer's insurance @ 3%. The same way you say the seller should, I factor that into my offering price. It works both ways.

I don't use them. I once had a account with them and I canceled them when they tried to sock me with outragous fees after a Ebay sale. On top of that they gave me a hard time giving me my money after my package was sent out. You're not alone, best to use checks, debit cards or money orders. Less headaches. IMHO plus it's cheaper.

i like paypal its a doubly secure way to buy goods online, i get tireed of buyers whining about the "outrageous " fee's its part of doing business and make it more likely that someone will buy....money orders have very little protection for the buyer...some sellers like this...

Pretty hard to add it on with a auction item . What gets my goat is ebays over 9% they now add on the shipping charges . A lot of buyers don't have a clue what it costs to sell on ebay . Listing fee, picture fee, final value fee, pay pal fee & now the shipping fee %.Next they will probably put a buyers fee on the item like the big car & auction houses do. All it takes is a couple of feedbacks that are not 5 star & they pull your top rated statis & you lose the discount you used to get. I lost mine because I added the % on shipping in the shipping charge & some one didn't like it . The buyer only pays it once, if I didn't it would be on me for every sale & that adds up.Ebay is NOT for the seller & with out them they don't seem to realize that there would be NO buyers . Thanks I needed to get this off my chest. Big Max 1935

You are absolutely correct. I can tell that you've been there and done that.

I'll buy from Ebay, but after what I went through with selling, I won't sell anything through them again. Pay-pal was my biggist pain though. If I want to sell anything I now do it from Craigs List, RCU or local club auctions. Swap meets are good too.

Sellers should never pass on fees .Its a cost of doing business. Nobody that buys would want to pay a retailer another 3 percent after the sale. Its easy to factor cost of doing business. 10 percent is a small price to pay to sell items and have secure methods of payment .Ask any retailer what his real costs are.

As a seller I don't add the fee to the item unless the purchaser chooses to pay via PayPal. Why should I charge the guy who wants to pay with a money order the additional cost of covering PayPal fees?

I guess we can start a new trend, set the price factoring in the fees and offer 3% off if you don't use paypal,, it's all in the way you look at it right?

p.s.
On Ebay,, I agree,, I liked the old fee structure much better,, 9% is ridiculous,, I won't use ebay to sell any longer, and in most cases you can find items price lower on the open market e-store sites,, Ebay has shot themselves in the foot big time.

I'm not crazy about many of the eBay changes over the last few years. Isuspect eBay started charging the final value fee on shipping because far too many sellers were avoiding the fee by charging overinflated shipping rates on cheaper items. It used to be common to see $0.99 items with $20 shipping fees.

Meanwhile, Ilike that they've removed the listing fee for low volume sellers. Irealize they raised the final value fee to cover it, but it's nice to be able to list something and only pay if it sells.

The change Idislike the most is that anything but 5 stars in the detailed ratings is viewed as negative. The bar for this should be set to 4 to allow some differentiation between sellers.

Good point and I think the seller also needs to understand that if someone pays with paypal, they will get payment as soon as the buyer hits the send (OK) button...no waiting for a money order or a check to clear the bank. It's a convienence for the buyer and as mighty9 said "... it's a cost of doing business"

I don't really care if a seller asks for the 3%, includes it or won't even take paypal, I'm not in that big a hurry. In the end I buy something if I want it and the total price is what I'm willing to pay. If you can't do the math in your head, pull out a calculator. On at least four occasions I've sent people $5 to cover paypal fees when they didn't even ask for it because the deal I was getting was so good to start with.

"Sellers should never pass on fees "

That's interesting. What does the local (and not so local) retailer do. Absorb the cost themselves??? I think NOT.

One other thing I missed on my other statement is that now ebay charges a % on shipping that is in addition to what pay pal charges on the cost of the item + the shipping . Sellers are being charged TWICE! How many local retail stores do that?
I agree with the feedback on shipping charges ,it should NOT be part of your rating .Ebay makes you show what you are charging for that item & the buyer knows what it is . If you don't like it don't bid! Simple
One of the first things I learned about ebay is that if you don't get the item or it is too high priced .Wait another is just around the corner .
When buying something check the sellers feed back ,read his discription , look close at the pictures & ask questions . I have always gone the extra mile with buyers . Just wish some buyers would have treated me the same. Big Max 1935 []

Have you seen the commercial where they are all sitting around the table. They have just eaten at a restaurant and one lady says, "that will be $37 per person". Then everyone pulls out their smart phone and starts tranferring $37 dollars from thier account to hers and then she pays the entire bill.

I'm not very "savvy" with the latest technology. But I believe it is possible to transfer monies from person to person now without Paypal. I think you need a smart phone or a computor and you need each other's email address, (which apparently is linked to the bank account some how). Not all banks offer this service yet. And I'm not certain if you can transfer from one brand name bank to another, (yet). But I suspect this will catch on big for the very reasons that many of you have mentioned above.

This could be the banks' answer to Paypal.

But some do give a cash discount like some gas stations. Credit card companies charge a merchant about 6-7% on a credit transaction, and about half that on a debit transaction.

What I find outrageous is that PayPal freezes your earnings for some time, for just in case there is a dispute!!!
What seller is willing to let you take his item home and keep it for 1 month before he can use his earnings. I think that is ridiculous and abusive

PayPal is an excellent and fast secure transaction method for both the seller and the buyer. PayPal defends the buyer in most cases in a dispute. The added 3% fee, in my opinion should be charged to the buyer instead of the Seller. What I am doing now is adjusting my asking price to include Paypals fees.I have sold things on RCU with the ad stating I will charge 3% in addition to the total price., not knowing after sending the invoice how the buyer is paying for that item. Then the buyer send a PayPal payment for the total asking price, not including the 3% fee. So, from now on I adjust the price accordingly which includes that fee.

Pete
Checks, debit cards and money orders - with no recourse when you get screwed.
Sorry, if you don't offer PayPal I won't buy from you. So it's to your advantage as well as the buyer's/

BTW, when you sell a home YOU pay the commission, right?  You figure that commission into the price.  If you work a deal with someone with a reduced commission you can lower the price to compensate.  Same here, if someone pays you cash, check, money order, etc, he could always ask for a 3% reduction in price.

The few times I've had discussions with merchants about credit transactions, Iwas led to beleive the fee was way less than the range you listed. One time Ioffered to pay cash instead of credit at a local business for a couple thousand $ worth of stuff if he'd give me a discount. The owner said his credit card transaction rate was so low he wouldn't offer me anything off.

+1 on this one. I had over 75 transaction on fleabay with 100% positive feedback and paypal was holding my money until either the buyer gave me positive feedback or the shipper confirmed the delivery...sheesh.

After reading a few posts here I can understand why some people feel the buyer should pay the paypal fees. Sometimes I see the "...add 3% for paypal fees" in the ad and it turns me away.

Would it be more fair if the seller split the paypal fees with the buyer?

You are absolutely correct. I can tell that you've been there and done that.

I'll buy from Ebay, but after what I went through with selling, I won't sell anything through them again. Pay-pal was my biggist pain though. If I want to sell anything I now do it from Craigs List, RCU or local club auctions. Swap meets are good too.

Pete
I can't stand paypal ... they are NOT anyone's pal. A credit card company will do more for you than paypal will. Paypal's only focus is to make money. Get into a dispute, and they only add to the confusion and problems. AND they take 60~90 days to make a decision. At that point, your credit card can't help you anymore because paypig sat on their thumbs while the time-line with the credit card whithered away. Secondly, paypal is owned by e-bay of pigs. And I can't stand e-bay of pigs either. After nickel-and-diming the seller, they make more of a profit than the seller does. That's not fair. I'd rather take a personal check from a buyer than to have paypig make money off of anything I sell.

Those two orginizations make more money off of transactions than people who launder money do! Even the Chinese crime bosses only take 1% when they launder money.
