Default Most visiable color to cover plane

I would like to here from anyone about the most visable color
to cover a plane. I have a tower low wing plane and even though
it is covered in three colors (red, white & blue) for some reason
it does not show up good and is hard to tell oreintation of
plane when in the air. the bottom is colored differant from the top
but it just does not stand out like I would like. Is there any better
color selections that would stand out like yellow, orange,
bright green, etc., etc.??? It is a .40 size just for information.

This is my SIG Somethin' Extra... Mostly orange, good for distance.
Top/bottom similar, but quite distinctive.
Lots of white on the bottom, good for orientation when close and manuvering.

I've always thought that since buzzards can be seen at very high altitudes, 1200+ feet, black should be good. My Sig Riser is xparent red and is easily seen at 6-800 ft. Jim

Default yellow

Bright yellow on the leading edge of the wing really helps. Best color i've seen for a leading edge!

Red white and blue works fine, if they are laid out right.

You need to have broad bands of color separated by broad bands of white.

I really like this color scheme. I've used several variations of it, and they all work well.

The light top is easily distinguished from the dark bottom, and the red wingtips can be seen for miles.

White is the brightest, most visible color for my eyes, especially on the leading edge of the wing. I used to have a problem when viewing a model when it was way out and coming right at you. That's about the smallest profile you can get (or, going directly away from you). It was especially bad around dusk. The plane would seem to blend in with the sky. White helped me.

I've got a 2 meter glider I fly a lot that is painted mostly bright yellow with black and orange trim. I use a power pod and flights usually make it up to almost out-of-sight (I've got to be careful or it WILL go o-o-s!) Thinking it would make it really stand out, I painted a checkerboard pattern (black and bright yellow) on the bottom of the wing. I was surprised to learn at what a low altitude the checkerboard pattern becomes completely unnoticeable! Just sorta looks like a dull yellow in no time as it's climbing.

Black leading edge shows up best coming towards you. Lighter colours like white, yellow, etc are to close of a shade to the sky blue when coming towards you.

The colors I see best are below. I like the red leading edge with a thin blue stripe...but...

...After seeing MinnFlyer's design (very nice, Mike), I think the next one I cover will be that design using neons.

Mapper, it looks everyone has their own opinion on what works best for them. Probably one of those things where you're going to have to decide what works best for you!

Suggestion: make up some color samples about the size you think you'd be looking at in the air. Set them up maybe 300 to 500 feet away and see what your eyes tell you. Try it on a bright, sunny day, a cloudy day, and even at dusk and see what works best for you.

Regardless of what colors you choose, I like contrasting stripes running parallel with the fuselage or large checkers on the underside of the wing.

Default Most visiable color to cover plane

This question prompted me to dig out some papers that haven’t seen daylight in loooooong time. A modeling buddy had given me a copy of an article titled “Model Aircraft Visibility”.

Don’t know who wrote it or where it originally appeared but it has some good info about contrasting colors and such.

Here is a partial breakdown of the most visible colors, in order.

Luminous Orange
White
Light Yellow
Light Orange

At the bottom of the list were:

Dark Red
Dark Blue
Black
Dark Green

The article mentions that choosing two colors, one from each end of the chart, will give best contrast under widest possible background variations.

hope this helps.

Default Colors?

Don't fly too far out and you won't have to worry about it. It works for me.

I've found that extremely different top/bottoms work best for manuvering airplanes.
And having a color theme helps...
Gaudy top, equally gaudy bottom...

Contrast is the key . Everyone sees color a bit different, so what works for one may not work for another.

Small stripes and checkerboard will blend at altitude, so make them large. Stripes are the most visible, just not small ones.

As mentioned also, totally different top and bottom.

Default my coat of many colors...

I have found that Cub Yellow with Dark Blue trim is about the easiest for me to see. Highly contrasting colors.

My funfly is fluoro pink upper surfaces and bright yellow underside, doesn't matter if its cloudy or clear skies - its always easy to see and pick the orientation.

I would have to agree with Jemo. CONTRAST IS THE KEY.

One way to check the contrast between two colors is to use some kind of Paint program on the computer, choose several colors and lay them out side by side on the page, and then view them in the greyscale mode. You will be surprised how many colors blend together.

I have seen other threads here where people have pointed out that as an object gets farther away, the human eye has a hard time seeing the color in certain lighting conditions. That is why it was recommended to me to do the greyscale thing and it has worked for me.

My latest color scheme was done in yellow and blue.

Just my 2 cents worth.
