I need a better Idea to store planes

First off please excuse the mess, Its a sad thing when you have more planes than good places for them to be stored..I have thought about building a shelfing area that hangs from the ceiling, but I am not convinced its the best way, so I am open to any idea's. Except for getting rid of planes ROFL..

Snurckle's wing rack is pretty neat! I built something similar but mine uses a rectangular frame of 2 by 4's and has 'feet' on the bottom. It's a lot uglier but it can be moved around and stand on its own. And mine also has some supports that stick straight out for holding fuselages.

RE: I need a better Idea to store planes

I use two different types of storage depending on the type of plane. If the wings are attached, I hang from the ceiling. If the wings are not attached, I hang on wall by the Hor Stab, placing the fuselages as close as possible to each other. The wings are stored in similar fashion as snurckle's. This seems to maximize storage place, but there's always a threshold of too many planes to safely store. I've run into that myself.
Now my big question for you. I couldn't help but notice where you have your hammer hanging. Is that so you can knock on the door?

All you guys need to get out and fly more!!!!! LOL All kidding aside I cut some 6" peices of 2X4 and drilled a 3/4" hole, then clued some PVC pipe in them. After some foam insulation sleeve, they get mounted on the wall in pairs and an assembled airplane will slide on. I have 5 airplanes running from floor to ceiling is a fairly small area.
Of course it's true, I read it on the Internet.

Over time what has worked for me best is keeping all the plug and play aircraft in the shop and relitively easy access to the truck through the big door and all the stored future projects (stashs) in other dedicated rooms.

In the shop a combination of methods is used starting with these simple quarter inch iron hangers: upright assembled hanging, inverted assembled hanging, separate wing racks on dowels, tail hanging without wings, Nose/ floor sitting without wings and harbour freght rolling tables for machine tools and airplane working racks along with some simple home made floor sliding work racks. One of the rolling tables doubles for an rolling transport for one float plane and everything needed to run it since its a long trek for wheelchair access to the flight line of my float flying club.

RE: I need a better Idea to store planes

I hang mine up on the ceiling. I do have a Great Planes Wing Rack in my bedroom, but only use it during flying season, and store my planes on my entertainment center, and my long low board dresser. In the winter like it is now, I just hang the planes up, then clean them up after taking them down and I iron out any loose fabric or covering just before flying season. The planes I don't fly often ( like the Dr1, and my new Gee Bee) remains on the ceiling until a big show or event, then I take it down and prep everything. My Hanger 9 Fokker DVII is used the most, It's considered to be my work horse so it's usually first ready for Spring.

I like to keep my planes and equipment in the house where I can control the tempature and humidity.

My wife loves airplanes, so she doesn't mind me having them over head in the bedroom. [8D]

there are many ways the to utilize the space between your cars bonnet and the ceiling to your advantage. personal requirements will dictate how this is doneit could be used for a building bench, freeing up space for hanging up your models

Well I don't know if I can help. But I feel better about my mess. Which reminds me, it's time to take pics again. These pics are part of a batch I take for insurance reasons once a year. I had a fire at my house once. That was 20 years ago, but ever since I take pics of everything I own once a year.

RE: I need a better Idea to store planes

Thank you David bathe but I can do without the Opra Winfrey advice and do it just fine my way and two, well only two flyable airplanes Now thats a quick way to croak. You see since my wife died ten years ago my hobby/sport is what keeps me alive and I will never quit producing new aircraft and flying just about every moring.

Now While one cannot walk in my shop and the only way to navigate my shop is by wheelchair I do just fine and every single airplane in my shop is plug and play or line clip and play. All the other project aircraft are stored in secret stashs and no not my home that I keep very simple and sparse, the only airplane in there is a controlline biplane that she took a shinning too. One day when I came home quickly to repair it after an inverted landing on a flameout she caught me and demanded I fix it and hang it in the vaulted roof. I have never flown that ship agine and it hangs as she left it.

Actually I have a spare wheelchair for visiters whom I choose to let into the inner sanctum

Glen thank you for the kind words

I have built some racks in my garage ceiling. I also have wall racks built from shelving brackets and pipe insulation. I need more space as I am building myself out of house and home. Good Luck, Dave

My basement has open joists, so a few screws and some cord, and I can hang them pretty up tight to the ceiling, with the tail and canopy up between the joists. for planes that have detached wings I can slip the wings up between the joists and hang them pretty much the same way. The landing gear just clears my head.

I use the Face-out shelf standard system also. What I like about it is, you can fit a lot of stuff in a tight space and it's fully and easily adjustable,, with pvc/emt,, once built you're stuck with that config. Shelf brackets are easily extended with pvc pipe
