The guys that use them use a 3 cell, but that does put you significantly over the voltage the radio was originally designed for. A better choice is LiFe, which virtually matches the voltages of a NiCd pack with all the benefits of a Lipo.

Make your own battery pack cheap. the eneloop batteries are cheap on the internet. You can plug them into a radio shack battery holder like normal batteries. cut the connector off your old battery pack thaat is in your radio and solder it onto the radio shack battery holder. the batteries can be charged by the same wall charger you are currently using except they have to charge for a longer time. As the batteries age and need replacements you just pop out the old batteries and pop in new batteries to the holder.
