I put a tailwheel on a plane that had a nose gear. Where I put a piece of plywood to make stronger now is bare. The covering was not good enough to put back. Question is how do you makie sure it is protected from fuel. What paint or do you put a small piece of covering there. I would think it would need paint or something. In general small repairs, how to make sure they are protected. Used to fuel proof paint that needed to me put on. I need to paint it white. Would regular paint with a thin coar of polyurealthane work. Excuse spelling here. Thanks , still going back together. gphil.

You can cover it. You can also use epoxy thinned with alcohol.

Thin CA is fuel proof too. A very thin wash of white paint will stain the wood white and then you can saturate it with CA for a quick and dirty fuel proof repair.

Best is unthinned slow (30 minute or slower) epoxy. Put it on as thin as you can then heat it with your heat gun just enough to where you see it suddenly suck itself into the wood. This will be the strongest and most durable coating you can get. Of course you can paint over it if you like.

It sounds from the post like he hasn't bought any covering yet and maybe doesn't have a heat gun. I can totally understand a new pilot not wanting to spend $40 to cover a little spot like that on a plane he's using as a trainer anyway.

You will always need covering, and an iron and a heat gun....

I can understand this - I remember being there too. Getting started is a big investment, so I remember holding off and trying to get by without a roll of covering or the necessary tools. I think I went through 3-4 planes before I bought a roll of covering, although I did have a few small pieces (and some stickers) donated.

Good examples above. I think I would probably paint it white, and coat it with epoxy.

Me too, I recall not having rolls of covering on hand and not having the money to spend on RC items. It didn't happen very long, it was the days before ARFs so you needed stuff.
I thin epoxy with alcohol too for fuel proofing. I also have some clear and colored Dope on hand, it is perfect for fuel proofing. I also have cans of different colors and types of paint. Lusterkote is fuel proof, I use quite a bit of the clear. Straight epoxy works too. Just bunches of ways.
